Module 4
Video, Activities
Each activity is based on your readings and evaluations of the videos. Within each activity below, you will find links to the materials on the Readings and Videos pages that will help you complete each Activity.

Activity 1, Introduction
Review the module introduction, objectives, and evaluation rubric.

Activity 2, Reflection/Idea Generator: Video
Of the first four modules, video is probably the most foreign of the technologies for you. Of course, you have been watching videos in this class, and you are seeing in this module how instructors can incorporate video into the classroom. For this assignment, let your imagination loose. Dream of a lesson in which you would incorporate video because it would greatly enhance the lesson. If you have been fortunate enough to use video successfully in the classroom, describe the lesson and how video enhanced it. Share your ideas or reflections with the class by posting your ideas in email to the Discussion list using the subject line TT: Module 4, Activity 2.

Activity 3, Collaborative Activity: Video Analysis
Since we have quite a few videos for this module, we're going to use a collaborative work division exercise known as Jigsaw.

  1. To start, each of you will be assigned to groups of three. Each group will be assigned two videos to view -- one on A/V production, one on video conferencing.
  2. Each group will answer the following questions:
    • describe the types of audio/visual techniques that were used in the videos you viewed
    • analyze the effectiveness of the audio/visual portions of the lesson
    • make recommendations for use of audio/visual elements in the K-12 classroom
  3. One member of the group should post the group's answers, noting all members of the group, to the Discussion list using the subject line TT: Module 4, Activity 3.
  4. As each group posts, we will notice that the answers will be coming together to form a "picture", which is why this is called a "Jigsaw" activity. The picture we will see, as your Instructor facilitates an online discussion based on your postings, is the creative use of audio/visual in the K-12 classroom.

Activity 4, Lesson Plan: Identifying Elements of the Lesson
We're at the stage where you will need to identify the categories needed for your lesson. Here is a list of the required sections you will need in your Lesson Plan:

  • materials needed
  • procedures or steps to the lesson

Here is a list of the optional elements for your lesson:

  • discussion questions
  • extensions (ideas for extending the Lesson Plan to other subjects)
  • suggested readings
  • Web links
  • vocabulary words

This activity will be a thinking and planning activity. You will need to clearly foresee your lesson, what you want your students to learn from it, and how you will help them achieve that learning.

At this point, you need to be developing a clear idea of how you will use technology to achieve the goals and objectives of your Lesson Plan. So far, we have looked at how office software, email, electronic information sources, and video conferencing can be used to advance a lesson. In the next module, we will discuss multimedia technologies, such as Microsoft's PowerPoint.

By the end of that module, you will have to identify a technology to incorporate into your lesson. For this module, go ahead and select which categories you foresee you will need in your Lesson Plan. To take another look ahead, you will have the opportunity to edit your entire lesson in Module 6, so don't worry that the choices you make here will be etched in stone! Writing lesson plans is rarely a linear activity; it is usually reflective and recursive. Thinking about making improvements and then making changes is a characteristic of a great teacher!

Select your categories to the best of your ability. Include a one to two sentence reason explaining why you chose the categories you selected. You are going to share your work with your PQP partner. After reviewing your partner's comments and making changes you feel necessary, email your list and reasons to your Instructor using the subject line TT: Module 4, Activity 4.

Be certain to update your Lesson Plan document that you are creating in your word processing program. Remember to include the final version of these elements, based on your Instructor's feedback.

When you have completed all of the activities in this module,
proceed to Module 5, Multimedia.
