Motivating
Students in the K - 12 Classroom
Welcome to a new University of Northern Iowa online professional
development workshop focusing on creating motivational instructional
materials using Keller's ARCS Model of Motivational Design
developed by John M. Keller of Florida State University.
This course is designed for K-12 classroom teachers, special
education staff, technology staff development coordinators,
and media specialists who have an interest in developing motivationally
based instructional materials.
In this online workshop, we will be exploring Keller's ARCS:
gaining Attention, making learning materials
Relevant, helping students feel Confidence
in their learning, and helping students feel Satisfaction
in their learning experience.
We will investigate each element of Keller's ARCS Model of
Motivational Design by examining each element in twelve modules
of instruction. You will also be working with a lesson of
instruction and adapting it based on application of Keller's
ARCS Model of Motivational Design. In each module, you will
adapt the lesson to the element analyzed in that module.
Within each module of instruction, you will be reading about
each topic, examining videos demonstrating the topic being
discussed, and you will engage in discussion activities and
curriculum development projects that will demonstrate your
understanding of each unit of instruction. The aim of workshop
is that you will create materials that are useful to you immediately
in your classroom.
