Teacher Education Induction Ceremony (Convocation)

Teacher Education Induction Convocation: Why?

"The Teacher Education Induction Convocation is an important event for teaching majors and for the teacher education faculty at the University of Northern Iowa.

  • It acknowledges that teaching is a very special profession made up of men and women highly dedicated to the future of the young people they teach.
  • It witnesses that selecting teaching as a career is a moral decision, a decision to dedicate one's self to the future of others and to the future of our country.
  • It confirms that it is through high quality education that we have the best chance of establishing and preserving stable democracy throughout the world."

Dr. Thomas Switzer, Dean College of Education, UNI, October, 1995

Convocation is for students who have been accepted into the Teacher Education Program. This ceremony marks a milestone in teacher preparation.

The semester following acceptance into the Teacher Education Program, students receive an invitation from the Office of Teacher Education to attend the Convocation. An RSVP is required to assist with preparation and planning. All UNI Teacher Education faculty members are invited to witness this honor.

Those students who will be attending the ceremony will receive information from the Teacher Education Office about when to arrive for the ceremony. Upon arriving at the GBPAC, students will be assisted by faculty in lining up for the march into the auditorium.

The ceremony begins with brief congratulatory remarks from University officials, faculty, and a keynote speaker. The students are then officially “presented” to the President of the University, or his official representative, as candidates for teacher preparation. This is followed by the “walk of recognition,” where candidates’ names are announced as they cross the stage, shake hands with members of the Teacher Education faculty leadership, and receive a certificate and pin symbolic of this achievement.

Refreshments are served in the lobby of the GBPAC following the recessional march.

When you have been admitted to the Teacher Education Program, put this important date on your calendar and invite your friends and family to witness your induction to the profession!
