Instructors of larger classes often impose severe restrictions on student writing assignments because of the workload associated with reading and grading students' written work. However, it is possible to design writing exercises that are not overly demanding of teacher time and yet provide students with valuable learning experiences. Student writing in larger classes can be facilitated through in-class assignments, non-graded exercises, summaries of lecture segments, and peer feedback groups.
