All
of the faculty new to UNI in fall 1999 and fall 2000, as well as their mentors, were
invited to participate in a study of the first-year experience for new
pre-tenure faculty. Approximately 75% of the new faculty and about one-half
of the mentors met in small conversation groups (2-5 persons) to discuss
questions about the first-year experience. From the findings of this follow-up, implications
are drawn for the Center's orientation program, mentoring,
the role of department heads, and university policies for the professional
development and support of new faculty.
