INTRODUCTION
Sweden is a
safe and modern country
in northern Europe, and it has accrued a spectacular reputation as an innovator
and creative force. Sweden has a long and proud history of academic excellence,
having outstanding universities dating back to the 15th century. Sweden is the
home of the Nobel Prize, the world's most prestigious academic distinction. The
big winner is Sweden’s popular music, so successful it has become an important
export product, making Sweden by some counts the world’s third biggest exporter
of music.
ÖREBRO
The city of Örebro has grown around a medieval
castle. The city of Örebro is situated in the heart of Sweden, about halfway
between Stockholm and Göteborg. It is easily accessible by major roads and
railways, or by air from Stockholm, Copenhagen and Malmö. Örebro, one of
Sweden's major cities, has long been a dynamic region. It has received awards
for investment in the general environment and for the well-preserved historical
city center—including the medieval caster — which is still fully in tune with
modern day life. The downtown area has much to offer, including modern shopping
centers, small stores, cinemas and art galleries, restaurants, coffee shops and
bars. There are abundant recreation facilities including both downhill and
cross-country skiing in Kilsbergen, one of Europe's largest indoor swimming
facilities at Gustavsvik. There are also great mountain bike and running tracks,
and year-round concerts and theater performances. The Hjälmaren Lake offers
small beaches and boat tours.
ÖREBRO UNIVERSITY
Örebro University is situated in Almby, 1,5 miles
from the center of Örebro. It’s one of the largest universities in Sweden. Like
all other Swedish universities it has a motto: Dulce est sapere (which
means ‘Knowing is a delight’ in Latin).
Örebro University came into existence as a result of the 1977 higher
education reform in Sweden. In 1999, Örebro University was granted full
university status. The university takes an active part in the development of the
region and is a national and international center for knowledge. Furthermore,
the external relation's office at Örebro University has strengthened contacts
with industry and the community.
Facilities include a bookshop, three restaurants and cafeterias, and
excellent sport facilities with a new workout center. The library is a European
Documentation Center (EDC), which makes it an excellent source for information
and research about the European Union. The Student Union is the natural meeting
place for all students and is also the home of the student magazine. The
students broadcast daily from their own radio station. Campus activities include
concerts, sports events and public lectures. Total enrollment is 11,500 students
