The DBS Ireland Study Abroad
Program offers undergraduate students an opportunity to study for a semester at
an Irish University. Students are fully integrated academically and socially
with their Irish counterparts at the Dublin Business School (DBS).
For four
months, you’ll study abroad in a country whose people are as well known for
their endless wit, warmth, and energy, as they are for their music, literature
and fishermen in “woolly jumpers.”
“Éire,” or Ireland, is legendary for its history and culture, beautifully lush
and sweeping countryside, and the hospitality of its people. Located just west
of Great Britain and a mere stone’s throw from mainland Europe, its small size
and close proximity to other European centers make studying abroad at DBS truly
unique.
Half of Ireland’s population is under the age of 26, so the energy is
undeniable. From the charming, modern, urban electricity of Dublin to the scenic
wonders and historical relics of its surrounding areas, Ireland is an amazing
place to study abroad.
DUBLIN
As
Ireland’s cosmopolitan capital and one of Europe’s truly great cultural centers,
Dublin is a dynamic city with a population of over one million, and a robust
economy.
You’ll be studying abroad at the center of it all. From the charm and heritage
of old world Dublin to Grafton Street’s pulsating energy, DBS offers a
remarkable blend of tradition and modernity because when you talk about the
city, you’re talking about the campus.
DUBLIN BUSINESS
SCHOOL
Dublin Business School (DBS) is one of the leading
independent business colleges in Ireland and provides a comprehensive range of
undergraduate, graduate, professional and executive education programms. The
School, which was originally known as Accountancy and Business College, was
established in 1975 to provide evening courses for students preparing for the
examinations of the professional accounting bodies. The School quickly
established an excellent reputation for quality and standards and its students
achieved a high level of success in the professional examinations. Based on this
reputation, the School developed rapidly and by the mid 1980's was providing
accounting, marketing and banking courses for full-time and part-time students.
DBS continues to offer a wide range of professional programmes and, consistently
over the years, its students have achieved exceptionally high pass rates and
several world status awards and prizes in the professional examinations.
DBS offers a number of its own social events, in addition
to the traditional Fresher’s Week, Halloween, Christmas and Rag week activities.
In the study abroad program you have the opportunity to join a number of clubs
and societies. Some of the most popular are the paintball, sailing and cricket
clubs. The paintball club is currently the most attended. The sailing team has
consistently won major events and was recently crowned Western Varsity
champions. And, our cricket team has won major tournaments in recent history.
Some other successful clubs you’ll find at DBS include the soccer and basketball
teams, among others.
ACADEMIC PROGRAM
The DBS Ireland program is
offered both fall and spring semesters. The autumn (fall) semester starts in
late August with the foundation course and ends in mid December. The spring
semester runs from early January to late April. Exact dates vary each year;
contact the study abroad office for specific information. Each semester in
Dublin begins with orientation.
DBS offers
business and liberal arts courses. You can browse the wide range of disciplines
and sample courses by clicking the following links.
Students choosing to participate in an internship will
need to submit a resume and internship preferences prior to departure. Early in
the semester, participating students will schedule interviews with prospective
employers for 20-hour/week unpaid positions. The applicant will also receive an
Internship Questionnaire so that he/she may provide his/her internship
preferences.
Once a student
has his/her internship, he/she will compile a journal of experiences that the
Resident Director and employer will review. Upon completion and acknowledgement,
the student will receive course credit.
In the past, DBS has
successfully placed students in a wide range of internships including: Guinness
Ireland, Bank of Ireland, Dublin Fire Brigade, St. Patrick's Athletic Football
Club, The National Gallery, The Gallery of Photography, Radio Telefis Eireann
(Ireland's television and radio service), An Garda Siochana (Ireland's police
force).
EARLY START PROGRAMS
Students choosing to go to Ireland during the fall or spring
semester will enroll in a month-long foundation course. The course
introduces Irish politics, history, literature, and culture. It is further
enhanced by field trips, usually to Belfast and the Aran Islands, along with
other historical sites that bring the coursework to life.
ACADEMIC SESSIONS
Fall Program: Late August – Mid December
Spring Program: Early January – Late April
Summer Program: Late May – Early July
CREDITS
All credits earned at DBS may be applied toward your degree.
Students will typically earn 12 - 15 credit hours for their semester of study.
The foundation course is worth 5 UNI credits. The maximum number of DBS credits
per semester is 30 (15 UNI). Transcripts will be sent to the students’ home
university upon completion of the program. Credits earned on the program do not
count against residency requirements for graduation.
ACCOMMODATION AND MEALS
Students are
encouraged to consider the most popular form of housing: an Irish homestay.
Carefully selected by DBS and highly recommended by past study abroad
participants, you’ll live with a “typical” Irish family and experience life
inside their home. This will deepen your knowledge of Irish culture and provide
insight into the daily life of another culture.
As an alternative, if you prefer more independent living arrangement, we are
pleased to offer housing in newly renovated student apartments in central
Dublin. Cooking facilities are available, and you will share the accommodations
with fellow students studying abroad.
If accepted,
the applicant will receive either a Host Family Matching Form or a Roommate
Matching Form depending on his/her preference and availability.
PROGRAM COST
The program fee for Spring 2005 is $9,400. The program fee
includes: Tuition, housing, two meals per day (excluding apartment living),
airport meet and greet, orientation, pre-departure advising, and ISIC card.
Program fee does not include: Airfare ($1,000), personal
expenses ($2,352), passport ($97), health insurance ($245).

Financial Aid Office. In many cases, students are able to apply most of their
financial aid to their study abroad experience. Participants in this program are

"I feel so much more independent and confident after living
on my own in a different country for eight months. I am also able to look at my
own country and way of life in America from a new perspective, and my experience
in Ireland will come with me wherever I go in life."(Lindsay Randolph)
