INTRODUCTION
U. of Hull is among the UK?s top five universities for the
employability of its graduates because of its academic
strength. The University is located in the vibrant riverside city
of Hull with an inescapable rich heritage. There is a great choice
of museums, shops, restaurants, a lively program of events and
festivals, and other attractions. If you have always wanted to
travel overseas, explore the UK and meet new people from all
over the world, then apply to study at the University of Hull!
THE CITY OF HULL
Hull is located in Northern England, approximately 3
hours from London. The city came into existence in
the end of the 12th century. It entered a prosperous
period in the mid-1800s thanks to the whaling
industry. During WWII, 7,000 inhabitants were killed
and 92 percent of the houses were bombed, making
it one of the most heavily bombed cities in Britain.
Now Hull is a dynamic, vibrant city, a wonderful
combination of old and new, from cobbled streets of
the Old Town to Princes Quay Shopping Centre,
proudly sparkling above the waters of the Marina.
The Marina forms an elegant focal point and is just
minutes away from the city?s fine selection of museums,
shops, and attractions. Currently, Hull offers a variety
of opportunities to students and visitors: pedestrian
areas for shopping, a wide selection of parks, trails,
sporting activities, symphony, theatre, cinemas, and
festivals. Hull is synonymous with live music and Hull
Arena is a magnet for big rock and pop concerts. City?s
nightclubs invite to dance until late. Theaters deliver
internationally-acclaimed drama, comedy, ballet, opera,
and musicals. Distinguished orchestras from Prague,
Moscow, and Berlin are some of the big names that
perform sell-out classical concerts within the richly-
ornamented Hull City Hall.
Hull has an active port from where various European
destinations can be reached. The Humberside
International Airport is located 30 minutes from the
city. Within easy traveling distance from York, Beverley
and Lincoln, Hull is the ideal touring base.
UNIVERSITY OF HULL
The University of Hull is a traditional university, founded in
1927, with a reputation for excellence in teaching and
research. The University is renowned for being one of the
friendliest in the UK, and even students staying for just one
semester soon become very attached and think of Hull with
the same fondness as their own university back home.
This medium-sized university of approximately 14,000
students offers 200-degree programs that provide a
balanced education in the classroom, and many
enriching activities outside of the classroom as well.
Central to student life at the University of Hull is the
Student Union. Facilities in the union include three
bars, a photographic dark room, a Laundromat, two
main eating areas, the university bookshop and the
union travel bureau. Students also have access to the
Sport and Fitness Center, which is within a five-minute
walk from most areas of campus.
The University campus is situated just three miles from
the center of Hull in the area that caters well fro student
needs. There is an abundance of pubs, cafes, takeaways
and bars close to the University.
TEN REASONS TO STUDY AT U. OF HULL
- Exceptional graduate employability
Hull is consistently among the UK?s top five
universities for the employability of its graduates.
- Outstanding teaching
Of those whose teaching has been assessed by
the Quality Assurance Agency, nearly three-
quarters of our academic departments have been
awarded 21 marks or more ? widely accepted as
the standard of excellence. As The Sunday
Times recently observed: ?Such teaching success,
across all discipline, is a rare find.?
- A major research centre
In a recent Funding Council exercise, the research
work of more than 70% of University academic
staff taking part was assessed as being of national
excellence with evidence of international excellence.
- Excellent academic facilities
Our libraries contain over a million books and
periodicals and work closely with the Computer
Centre and Language Institute to create a first-class
environment for study.
- Superb students? union
By reputation Hull?s Union is among the best-equipped
and most successful in Britain. Hundreds of students
represent their peers on University bodies across both
campuses; and a ?millennium makeover? will provide
even more space in the Union?s Hull Campus base for
headline bands, theatre, dance, bars, restaurants and
other facilities.
- Top sports facilities
An excellent Sports and Fitness Centre with adjacent
sports grounds and floodit all-weather surfaces on the
Hull Campus; a range of other outdoor pursuits (from
climbing to mountain biking, not to mention the east
coast?s best surfing) from our Scarborough Campus.
- Accommodation guarantee
Students who apply in good time are guaranteed a place
in accommodation owned, managed or arranged by the
University.
- An exciting and attractive environment
Hull and Scarborough provide all the social and cultural
amenities you would expect of a vibrant modern city and
its region?s busiest resort, with the sea, the Wolds and
the North York Moors for recreation, and direct links to
continental Europe.
- A cosmopolitan experience
University life is enriched by our international students
from more than 100 countries and a growing number of
mature students (from 21 to 70+).
- Good student retention rates
Official figures place us among the top five UK
universities for completion rates. Very few of our
students drop out, which we feel reflects the fact that
Hull is among the UK?s friendliest and most supportive
universities.
