INTRODUCTION
This land has experienced many natural disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes. During the 20th centeru, it was often torn apart with ppolitical conflict and war. Twice the United States intervened under the premise of protecting U.S. interests and security.
Today, a peaceful society is adapting to becomgint a true democracy and looking with hope to a better future. The closeness of family, community, and faith is rich and is the source of strength for many. North Americans are welcomed with open arms.
There is an unforgettable joy in spending time with the children and sharing ideas and sweat with the community leaders. Join us on an experience that you will never forget!
THE CITY OF MANAGUA
Managua is the capital city of Nicaragua located on the southwestern shore of Lago de Managua. A former fishing village, Managua became the capital of Nicaragua in 1824, after the Central American nation became independent from Spain, and Managua's location between the rival cities of Leòn and Granada made it an ideal compromise site. The city has witnessed the rise and fall of political powers throughout Nicaragua's history and has suffered two devastating earthquakes over the course of the 20th century.Managua is the economic, political, cultural, commercial and industrial center.
HONORS IN COMMUNICATIVE DISORDERS
This program is for students interested in observing and assesssing the various communicative disorders that envelope the Nicaraguan people. The course will not be tought in a traditional classroom setting, but rather onsite in orphanages, on the street in and around the city, enabling them to see the traching at work.
PROGRAM ACTIVITIES
- Lectures by Nicaraguan experts;
- Site visits to hospitals and orphanages in and around Managua;
- Job shadowing and observations;
- Community projects;
- Cultural trips and excursions.
ASSESSMENT:
- Final written report
- Daily logs
- Two formal presentations & displays
FINANCIAL AID & SCHOLARSHIPS
Participants are eligible for the Study Abroad Scholarship and a variety of other funding options.
ELIGIBILITY
Applicants must be full-time students at UNI at the time of application, at least sophomore status during the time abroad, have departmental approval for participation, and an overall G.P.A. of
2.5.
PROGRAM COST
Program Costs:
- UNI tuition 3 credits ($813)
- Study Abroad Fee ($150)
- Housing and meals ($550)
- Airfare (approximately $800)
- Passport $97 (if needed)
- Student travel (ISIC) card $22
- City transportation and translation (approximately $150)
- Cultural activities in Arica (approximately $150)
Additional Costs:
- Pocket money (approximately $300)
- Health Insurance (if needed)
