PROGRAM OVERVIEW Picture yourself in
France! This program offers UNI undergraduate students the opportunity to
study for a semester or a year at a French university. Students who wish to
study the French language and related topics to French civilization may take
courses to improve proficiency at the Centre de linguistique appliqué de
Besanéon. These courses, provided successful completion, will transfer back to
UNI and will satisfy requirements in the student's major, minor, Liberal Arts
Core, or count as electives. BesanÉon Known as the greenest city
in France,
Besanéon is the capital and principal city of the Franche-Comté region of
northeastern France. It is located close the border with Switzerland. Besanéon
is about 215 miles from Paris and 60 miles from Dijon, Lausanne and Belfort. It
is at the feet of the
Jura Mountains. UniversitÉ de Franche-ComtÉ The CLA has over 3000
students per year and about 150 nationalities. CLA specializes in the teaching
of languages, mainly for professional proposes. It undertakes numerous missions
abroad: language teaching, the training of teachers and teacher trainers, and
aid and expertise in the setting up of programs for education and cultural
institutions. ACADEMIC PROGRAM CLA: Students wishing to improve language proficiency enroll in the French language program. Students must have approximately 200 hours of previous instruction. At the beginning of each semester students are tested for language proficiency. Depending on proficiency level, courses are available in: Comprehension and Expression, Grammar, Phonetics. Students may take the Semi-Intensive course or the Language, Culture and Society. "Diplomes": Students participating in the CIDEF program may receive diplomas in: The Alliance Francaise de Paris, The Chamber de Commerce et dé Industrie de Paris, The units of D.E.L.F, CREDITS All credit earned at CLA may be applied toward your UNI degree. Students will typically earn a total of 12-18 credit hours for their semester of study. Transcripts will be sent to the students home university upon completion of the program. Credits earned on the program do not count against residency requirements for graduation. ACADEMIC SESSIONS: Winter semester: October
- January 1 ACCOMMODATION & MEALS Accommodation and meals are
arranged by the host institution. Students have a variety of options for
housing, including home stay, residence halls, or private accommodation. Those
wishing to improve their level of spoken French usually opt for housing with a
local family arranged by CLA. Students may eat with the host family, prepare
their own meals, or eat at the university restaurant. Participants should budget
about $350 per month for housing and $10 per day for food. Students residing in
France longer than 90 days may also be eligible for government-subsidized
housing refunds. Applications are available on site. ELIGIBILITY Full-time enrollment at UNI
at the time of application, at least sophomore status during the program abroad,
departmental approval for participation, and an overall G.P.A. of 2.8. Students
must have completed 200 hours of instruction in French. PROGRAM COST Program fee excludes: Housing, meals, airfare, excursion, passport, visa, medical examination, international health insurance. The fee will include the CLA university tuition and the study abroad fee. FINANCIAL AID & SCHOLARSHIPS Students eligible for
financial aid should contact the UNI Financial Aid Office. In many cases,
students are able to apply most of their financial aid to their study abroad
experience. Participants in this program may wish to apply for the
Study Abroad Scholarship and explore a variety of other UNI and external

Submit all application materials (originals and one set of copies) to the UNI Study Abroad Office, 59 Baker by the application deadline. Your application will then be sent to CLA. Final decision regarding admission will be made after the review of application by the partner institution. Official letter of admission will be sent to you directly from the host institution along with further instructions. Please notify your study abroad advisor when your letter of admission arrives and make an appointment to discuss further steps in preparation for your program abroad. DEADLINES March 1
