INTRODUCTION
With its scenic Old Town, the world’s largest castle, and abundance of soot covered Gothic spires, Prague is the archetypal medieval city. Museums, cafes, bookstores, and quaint shops mark Prague’s intellectual, beat atmosphere. The mix of medieval and modern blends Prague into an immensely beautiful city, and the destination for droves of tourists annually.
The capital of the Czech Republic and of Bohemia from the Early Middle Ages onwards, Czech heritage and history line every cobblestone in Prague. The city grew steadily from the early seat of Bohemian princes at Vyšehrad until it became a major medieval city, complete with a central square, castle, and cathedrals, the most imposing of which, St. Vitus, lies within the walls of Prague Castle, and on top of the grave of the Czech missionary and martyr Saint Vojtěch. Prague played a major role throughout history, as the seat of one of the German Holy Roman Empire’s electors and alternatively as the location for the Pan-Slavic Conference.
The two week program and three credit course “Perspectives on Czech Life and Culture,” specifically cover issues related to the location. The students will embark on organized trips around Bohemia and Moravia, the two states which constitute the Czech Republic. Students will also visit sites within the sprawling metropolis of Prague as well as those in less populated areas. Additionally, academic experts from the Czech Republic will conduct numerous lectures for UNI.
