San Jose, located in the center of Costa Rica, is the capital of Costa Rica with a population of about 300,000 people. San Jose makes up about 37% of the nation’s population therefore giving you numerous venues of entertainment from nightclubs, casinos and shopping malls to museums and restaurants. Costa Rica is an adventurer’s palace. Travel outside the city and you can go scuba diving, white water rafting, visit one of the many beautiful waterfalls or volcanoes or take an exhilarating forest canopy tour.

According to the Pacific Business News of Honolulu, Costa Rica was the number one adventure destination in 2003. One can understand why, when you have a pleasant climate year round and beautiful views of lush green mountainsides surrounding this bustling city.

VERITAS UNIVERSITY OF COSTA RICA

Veritas University was founded in 1975 as the first private university in Costa Rica. It has since grown to become one of the most highly recognized private universities in Latin America. It has approximately 2,500 students, 500 of which are international, and all have access to the university’s computer lab, library, cafeteria, campus bookstore, and tourist office.  Veritas also a number of extracurricular activities such as cooking and dancing lessons, intramural sports and excursions to the beaches, mountains, and volcanoes in and around the area.

ACADEMIC PROGRAM

The regular academic year is divided into three 12-week installments. The first term begins at the start of January and runs until the end of March, the second runs from the end of March to the end of June and the third runs from the end of September to the middle of December. Veritas offers a unique academic program in that one may take intensive language courses with little to no Spanish to proficiency as well as a myriad of English electives in areas such as International Business, Communication, Environmental Sciences, and the Fine Arts. Beyond this, Veritas offers some Spanish electives in culture and literature as well as courses in the Fine Arts that students take alongside Costa Ricans.

If you cannot break-away for 12-weeks, consider the summer Language Immersion program taught by the university. Students may choose to study at any level of Spanish from 4-weeks to up to 16-weeks. Classroom sizes are small and integrated.

Finally, Veritas offers a specialized summer course in Spanish for Health Professionals. If interested, contact the UNI Study Abroad Office for more information.
