INTRODUCTION

The UNI summer work abroad/internship program in collaboration with Dongguan University offers UNI students an opportunity to utilize their curriculum skills outside of the classroom, at a Chinese university. This summer program aims to cultivate an English speaking environment, encouraging local Chinese students to communicate with native English speakers.


DONGGUAN CITY

Dongguan City is situated in the mid-south of Guangdong, north-east of the Pearl River Delta, with Guangzhou to the north, Shenzhen to the south, neighboring to Hong Kong and Macao. It was named Dongguan because it is situated to the east of Guangzhou, and Guan grass is abundant there. The land area is 2,465 square kilometers, with a coastal line of 115.94 kilometers. The registered population is 1.5389 million. Dongguan is a well-known homeland of overseas Chinese, with 0.20 million living abroad and 0.74 million of compatriots in Hong Kong and Macao that originated from Dongguan.

Dongguan was an ancient place in history. Dongguan was the place where the modern history of China began. In September 1985 the county was promoted to city and in January 1988 it was further elevated to a city of the prefecture level. Dongguan City is an important communication pivot in South China. Within a radius of 50 km there are two airports: Huangtian Airport of Shenzhen and Baiyun Airport of Guangzhou. Dongguan is bestowed with rich tourist resources.


DONGGUAN UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY

Dongguan University of Technology, founded in April 1992, was ratified by Ministry of Education in March 2002 to start four-year undergraduate programs and entitled to confer the Bachelor's Degree. The university is located in Dongguan City, which is 100 kilometers away from Hong Kong. Its picturesque campus, covering an area of 100 hectares, is tastefully landscaped with lakes, green trees and colorful flowers. The architectural design of each building is considered as a masterpiece of art.

At present the university consists of 11 regular departments with seven subject areas, offering 18 specialties for four-year undergraduate programs, and 35 specialties for three-year professional training programs. Recently the university has established two new faculties: City College and School of Software. By now, the university has a recruitment of 10,000 full-time students nationwide and over 10,000 adult students. Most of the teaching staff and research staff have either Master's degree or Doctor's degree. Professors of international prestige have come one after another, engaged as our honorary professors, visiting professors or part-time professors.

The university has established a cooperative relationship with 18 national universities and a number of foreign universities in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. The developing DUT (Dongguan University of Technology) is working hard to turn itself into an important base for training talents and original scientific research, cradle for transformation of achievements in scientific research. The university is on its way to being a famous local university.


WORK PROGRAM

Dongguan University of Technology, the Chinese-American Society and UNI are proud to present this three week-long program of teaching English to native Chinese students. The UNI students participating in the program, will choose and assign grammar, speech, conversation, songs, and other curriculum to the native Chinese students. UNI students will be expected to work 30 hrs/week  in a formal classroom setting and participate in all camp activities: lessons in the first part of the day and leisure activities in the afternoon.


SESSION

The Dongguan University Summer Camp is only offered once per year. Program dates for this year are July 5 (Sa)—August 3 (Su).  UNI students are expected to arrive a few days before the beginning of the camp. After the camp is over, the students will have an opportunity to participate in a cultural trip to Guilin or Beijing. Due to the 2008 Olympics, Beijing Trip will be substituted to a trip to Shanghai. If you plan to travel after the Camp is over, please make necessary arrangements as early as possible and inform Study Abroad Staff about your plans.


ACCOMMODATION & MEALS

 All meals and accommodation will be provided by Dongguan University. Roundtrip airfare will be purchased by the Dongguan University of Technology up to $1000, the students are responsible for paying  the remaining amount of money.  Accommodations are in a dormitory on campus, two people per room.  Feel free to indicate your roommate preferences on your application


PROGRAM COST

UNI participants will be charged UNI tuition (a minimum of 3 credits) and a $150 study abroad fee. In addition to the program tuition (3 credits), UNI students participating in the program can also take a capstone course (2 credits) and World of Technology course (3 credits).  Students will be responsible for additional tuition charges for these two courses.
Program fee does not include: personal expenses (approximately $300), passport ($97), ISIC card ($22), visa to China ($70), and a cost of the cultural trip during the last week of the program ($450).
Students will also receive a small compensation for their work at the camp: 2,000 local currency, which is equal to about 250-260 U.S. dollars. Additionally, participants can take advantage of free weekend trips to nearby areas and a four-day excursion to Guilin, as well as free laundry services during their stay.


FINANCIAL AID & SCHOLARSHIPS

Students eligible for financial aid should contact the UNI Office of Financial aid to make necessary arrangements. In most cases, students can apply their financial aid toward (and their financial aid package can be adjusted to reflect) the cost of participating in this program.


ELIGIBILITY

20 UNI graduate and undergraduate students will be selected to take part in the Dongguan University Summer Camp. Applicants must be UNI students at the time of application, classified as at least a sophomore by the beginning of the program, have departmental approval for participation, and an overall minimum G.P.A. of 2.5.


APPLICATION PROCEDURES

A complete set of application materials will include one original and one copy of the following:

Upon acception to the program students will have to submit the following documents

  • Copy of the 1st page of your Passport
  • ISIC card ($22 in the Study Abroad Office)
  • Visa Application Form + 1 passport size picture (additional fees of $50 (visa) +$20 (processing fee) will be applied) Will be available from the Study Abroad Office after acceptances are made
In addition to the application packet all participants are required to attend a Campus Interview in early May. Specific dates and times will be announced to applicants.
