Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, is a planned city. Inaugurated in 1960 in the Central Highlands of Brazil, it is a masterpiece of modernist architecture listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and attracts architecture aficionados worldwide. Brasilia is also an important transportation hub for travel within Brazil.

The basic structure of Brasilia was completed in just four years, from 1956 to 1960, under the leadership of President Juscelino Kubitschek, with the slogan "fifty years of progress in five", and the city is in a sense a memorial to him. After less than 50 years from its creation, Brasilia is still developing a culture of its own.

The city plan is designed in the shape of a giant bird or airplane, with various separated zones assigned for specific functions such as housing, commerce, hospitals and banking. Running down the center of the "airplane's" fuselage is the thoroughfare called the Eixo Monumental (Monumental Axis) and at one end lay the government buildings. The arched "wings" are residential zones, with several rows of medium-rise apartment blocks with small commercial districts. The intersection is the commercial and cultural hub, with stores, hotels, and the cathedral. A huge artificial lake serves the city as both a leisure area and to diminish the effects of low humidity in drier months.

The original planned area (called Plano Piloto) is home to about 500,000 inhabitants, most of the city's upper classes. The so-called satellite cities (6 to 25 miles away, some in the neighbouring State of Goiás) concentrate the remainder of the almost three million inhabitants of this metropolis.

The University of Brasilia is located in the heart of Brasilia, on the banks of Paranoá Lake. Marked by unmistakable modernist architecture, its physical facilities house 23 institutes and schools; 50 departments; 16 scientific, technological, cultural, artistic and general service centers; student, faculty and staff residences; a University Hospital; a Sports Center equipped with swimming pools, race-track and various sports fields and courts; a Seismological Observatory capable of registering earthquakes across the planet; an Animal Research Laboratory and an Ecological Station. UnB is also about to build its own technological park.

The Dongguan University Summer Camp is only offered once per year. Program dates for this year are July 5 (Sa)—August 3 (Su).  UNI students are expected to arrive a few days before the beginning of the camp. After the camp is over, the students will have an opportunity to participate in a cultural trip to Guilin or Beijing. If you plan to travel after the Camp is over, please make necessary arrangements as early as possible and inform Study Abroad Staff about your plans.

The UnB does not offer accommodation to exchange students. However a list with possibilities of accommodation in Brasilia is available at the International Affairs Office.

UNI participants will be charged UNI tuition. Accommodation averages US$400 a month, meals US$470 a month, and public transport US$95 a month.

Students eligible for financial aid should contact the UNI Office of Financial aid to make necessary arrangements. In most cases, students can apply their financial aid toward (and their financial aid package can be adjusted to reflect) the cost of participating in this program.

Applicants must be full-time students at UNI at the time of application, at least sophomore status during the time abroad, have departmental approval for participation, and an overall G.P.A. of 2.5.
