ACADEMIC PROGRAM
The study abroad program at the University of Tasmania begins with a week long
orientation that
prepares students for the academic and cultural experiences ahead. Students then enroll in regular
courses offered by the University.
The course coverings are comprehensive, but the format may be different than what you are used to in
the states. As with any international program, you should be willing to adjust to the way that they
teach, how outside work is handled, and the method in which exams are administered.
Academic credit earned at the University of Tasmania transfers to the University of Northern Iowa.
Study Aboard students must enroll for the equivalent of a "full-load" of courses while studying at
Tasmania. A "full-load" is typically 3 or 4 courses and is generally equivalent to 12 or 16 s.h. of
credit at the University of Northern Iowa.
The fact must be acknowledged that there is an English Language Center available to you if English
is not your first language. Also, whether or not you have proficiency in English, there is an Academic
Support Program specifically for students studying abroad with their university.

TALES FROM ABROAD
"I wasn't sure what to expect when I left to study abroad but I knew I
had to do it. What I have experienced at The University of Tasmania has
been a diversified, influential, and a challenging one. The people I
have met in Australia and from other countries have given me
perspectives I would have otherwise lacked. Academically my classes
have improved my ability to adapt to unfamiliar circumstances.
Everything from the classroom settings to the professors to course
structures has forced me to grow and expand my ways of thinking."
"Spending a semester abroad at the University of Tasmania has opened up
numerous opportunities. Besides receiving high quality insightful
education studying abroad opens up new possibilities. The world becomes
much smaller and reachable after studying abroad. I have never
considered going to graduate school or working outside the country after
graduation. Fortunately studying in Tasmania has helped me realize the
world is my only boundary, and it up to me to decide where I want to
go."
"Tasmania changed my life! This little known state is full of pristine
beaches, friendly wildlife, and more gorgeous colors in the sunset than
you can ever imagine. While I was in Tasmania, I experienced many new
things including rugby, bushwalking and wallabies galore. You'll never
regret your decision to go here; not a moment for the rest of your life!"
