INTRODUCTION

TASMANIA

Australia is one of the more popular destinations for students interested in studying abroad with the University of Northern Iowa. Not only do our students tell us upon their return that they received a rewarding education and had a fun time in general, but they come away with experiences that last a lifetime and often friends, too.

Studying in Tasmania would definitely be a worthwhile and fulfilling experience for anyone with a thirst for something different. A quick stop in the Study Abroad Office and you can ask our program director or a peer advisor about all the intricacies of the program. There are many clubs and activities that you can take part in during your time in Australia, and there is sure to never be a dull moment as the campus gives you access to a travel office, activities center, bar, and computing facilities, to name a few things.

Whether you are living on the Hobart or Launceston campus, you are sure to be exposed to picturesque beauty. There is an idyllic landscape, a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, as well as a rich history.

UNIVERSITY OF TASMANIA

The University of Tasmania was founded in 1890, and still today it is a world renowned institution. As mentioned before there are two campuses, situated two and a half hours apart, and a total of 12,000 home and international students. There is a wide variety of subjects to study, so you are certain to find something that interests you prior to departure.

Once you have reached the university, you will find that there are International Student Advisors and an International Service Center that can assist you in many ways. They are even there to consult while you are still at home in the states.

There are many facilities, centers, programs, clubs, and societies there for you to utilize. Clubs and societies range from those typical to UNI and other American universities, to Surf Club, Bushwalking Club, Sailing and Boardsailing, Gourmet Travelers Society, Try Anything Once Club, and Bottom of the Earth Society.

Field trips are also offered and include, the Tarkine, scuba diving and exploring the shipwrecks off the Tasman Peninsula, Concerts at the Gorge, From Crater Falls to Cradle Mountain, biking, surfing, safaris, and the list goes on and on.

ACADEMIC PROGRAM

The study abroad program at the University of Tasmania begins with a week long orientation that prepares students for the academic and cultural experiences ahead. Students then enroll in regular courses offered by the University.

The course coverings are comprehensive, but the format may be different than what you are used to in the states. As with any international program, you should be willing to adjust to the way that they teach, how outside work is handled, and the method in which exams are administered.

Academic credit earned at the University of Tasmania transfers to the University of Northern Iowa. Study Aboard students must enroll for the equivalent of a "full-load" of courses while studying at Tasmania. A "full-load" is typically 3 or 4 courses and is generally equivalent to 12 or 16 s.h. of credit at the University of Northern Iowa.

The fact must be acknowledged that there is an English Language Center available to you if English is not your first language. Also, whether or not you have proficiency in English, there is an Academic Support Program specifically for students studying abroad with their university.

There are several housing options available to international students, both at Hobart and Launceston campuses.

At Hobart, there are three residential colleges: Christ College, St. John Fisher College, and Jane Franklin Hall. They are all co-ed with single bedrooms, shared bathrooms, and full meal plans. These do tend to be the most expensive housing option.

Also at Hobart, there are shared housing and apartments available through the Tasmania University Union (TUU) Housing Office. You can also rent on your own, if that is what you choose to do. This would be the preferential housing option for students who are on a tighter budget, like to do their own food shopping, and like a bit more freedom.

At Launceston campus, residential colleges are also available aprena Hall and Australian Maritime College. These are self-catering, have shared bathroom and lounge facilities. Shared houses and apartments are also available to you but are in high demand.

TALES FROM ABROAD

"I wasn't sure what to expect when I left to study abroad but I knew I
had to do it.  What I have experienced at The University of Tasmania has
been a diversified, influential, and a challenging one.  The people I
have met in Australia and from other countries have given me
perspectives I would have otherwise lacked.  Academically my classes
have improved my ability to adapt to unfamiliar circumstances.
Everything from the classroom settings to the professors to course
structures has forced me to grow and expand my ways of thinking."

"Spending a semester abroad at the University of Tasmania has opened up
numerous opportunities.  Besides receiving high quality insightful
education studying abroad opens up new possibilities.  The world becomes
much smaller and reachable after studying abroad.  I have never
considered going to graduate school or working outside the country after
graduation.  Fortunately studying in Tasmania has helped me realize the
world is my only boundary, and it up to me to decide where I want to
go."

"Tasmania changed my life!  This little known state is full of pristine
beaches, friendly wildlife, and more gorgeous colors in the sunset than
you can ever imagine.  While I was in Tasmania, I experienced many new
things including rugby, bushwalking and wallabies galore.  You'll never
regret your decision to go here; not a moment for the rest of your life!"
