Immigration & Customs

IMMIGRATION. At the port of entry (airport in most cases) into the country of your destination, you will have to go through immigration. Immigration officials will ask you routine questions about the purpose of your visit and how long you propose to stay in their country. Immigration officers will also examine your passport, visa, immunization certificates or proof of health insurance, if they are required. They may or may not then stamp your passport, and you are free to enter the country. This process may be simple and quick or quite complex and lengthy, depending or your destination country or the time of day. Even though you may be tired at this point, you should remain patient and respond politely to any questions.

CUSTOMS. After Immigration, you will have to go through Customs. The Customs Officer will ask whether you have anything to declare (perhaps in writing) and about certain items you may have in your luggage. Declare any restricted items, as luggage may be opened and checked. Always be respectful and polite. Cracking jokes about bombs or illegal drugs is never a good idea. This kind of having fun may result in being detained by the police.
