UNI SCHOLARSHIPS & GRANTS

The Study Abroad Scholarship  

The Study Abroad Scholarship provides financial support toward the costs associated with an approved academic program abroad administered by the Office of International Programs.  The scholarship is applied directly toward the student's U-bill and it may affect other types of aid the student may receive. 

Eligibility: 
Full-time enrollment at UNI and good academic standing at the time of application. 
Minimum GPA: 2.75.  
Please note: Participants in non-UNI programs and administered UNI programs not co-sponsored by the Office of International Programs are not eligible for this scholarship. 

Application deadlines: 
October 30 for Spring programs 
March 30 for Summer, Fall and Academic Year programs.

The Robert Eller Scholarship for Study Abroad

The Robert Eller Scholarship has been established to foster the educational, professional, and personal growth of an undergraduate student at the University of Northern Iowa by providing funds for a semester or a year of study outside the U.S. to a student without previous travel and study experiences abroad.  Preference will be given to students with no previous travel, study, or residence in a foreign country. 

Eligibility:
All applicants must meet the following qualifications: 

1.  Iowa residency (Iowa birth or three years of Iowa residency)
2.  Full-time enrollment at UNI in a degree-granting program with a minimum of 3.00 G.P.A.
3.  At least sophomore status and no less than one semester of study at UNI after the program abroad
4.  Completion of UNI’s foreign language graduation requirement before the initiation of the program abroad

Lawrence Jepson International Business and Economics Grant

Eligibility: 
To be eligible, an applicant must be a student in good standing and either:
1.                  Accepted into the College of Business Administration or
2.                  An approved economics major

The BUTEX Scholarship

BUTEX is pleased to offer two scholarships for students currently registered at an institution in the USA or Canada for the academic year 2006/07. To be eligible to apply you must have been offered a place as a study abroad or exchange student in a UK university which is a member of BUTEX (University of Hull and University of Wales, Swansea are both members).

The value of each scholarship is £400 (about $740) and will be paid to the winners once they have arrived and registered at their host university. Applications can be found here:

Yamanashi Scholarship for Study Abroad in Japan

Yamanashi Prefecture, Iowa's sister state in Japan, is offering a scholarship for university study at the Yamanashi Women's Junior College, located in the city of Kofu. The scholarship is open to both women and men.

Iowa Sister States is pleased to announce the 2007-2008 Yamanashi
Scholarship.  This scholarship opportunity is for any Iowa resident,
or Iowan attending college outside of Iowa who meets the following
qualifications:

       The applicant must be a US citizen between the ages of 20 and
39 upon application date.
        The applicant must currently be attending college. (and have
completed at least 2 years)
        The applicant must possess some Japanese language skills.
        The applicant must be willing to complete a research paper.
(advisors at the college will help with this)

The winner of the scholarship will study at Yamanashi Prefectural
University in Kofu.  Lodging and tuition will be paid by the
scholarship.  The winner will be responsible for travel and living
expenses.

Classes will begin in June of 2007 and go through March of 2008.

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for Undergraduate Study Abroad

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education, this program enables students who have limited financial means the opportunity to participate in study abroad opportunities worldwide. The program provides awards of up to $5,000 for U.S. citizen undergraduate students at two- and four-year institutions to pursue country-based semester or academic-year long study opportunities abroad. 

To be eligible students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application and cannot be studying abroad in a country currently under a U.S. Department of State Travel Warning or in Cuba. Fulbright U.S. Student Scholarship
The Fulbright grants provide full support for one academic year of graduate study or research abroad. Approximately 900 grants for study in 100 countries are awarded nationally each year. 

Eligibility:

Applicants must be U.S. citizens, hold a B.A. degree or equivalent by the beginning date of the grant, and have sufficient proficiency in the written and spoken language of the host country to carry out the proposed project. (Note: About 40% of Fulbright Grants are currently being awarded to graduating seniors.) Competition usually opens in May.

Enrolled students must submit applications to their campus FPAs (Fulbright Program Advisors) by the dates set by them. FPAs must submit all applications for Fulbright full and travel grants  from enrolled students to the New York office of IIE by October 21, 2004. At-large applicants not enrolled at US institutions or whose institution does not have a Fulbright Program Advisor must submit their applications to the New York office of IIE by October 21, 2004 for both full and travel grants.

Marshall Scholarship for study abroad in the UK

The Marshall Scholarships are highly competitive, full awards for graduate (and occasionally undergraduate) study in any discipline at any British university.  Up to 40 new Marshall Scholarships are awarded each year.  The awards allow recipients with US citizenship to study for a period of two and in some cases three years at graduate or undergraduate level at any university in the United Kingdom, in any discipline leading to the award of a British university degree.  Each scholarship comprises:

  • a personal allowance for residence and cost of living
  • tuition fees
  • grants for books, travel in connection with studies, and other miscellaneous expenses
  • travel to and from the United States
  • a marriage allowance, where applicable

To qualify, candidates must:

  • be American citizens at time of application
  • apply within two years of graduating from their undergraduate college or university
  • have (after freshman year) a grade point average of at least 3.7 (A-)
  • take up their award within three years of graduating from college in the United States
  • not be studying for or hold a British University degree.

Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships
The Rotary Club of Des Moines is currently taking applications for Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships to study abroad. These scholarships aim to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries. Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships are for study in another country where there is a Rotary Club. Recipients are expected to be outstanding ambassadors of goodwill through appearances before Rotary Clubs, schools, civic organizations, and other forums in the host country and are expected to share the experiences of understanding acquired during their period abroad with the people of their home countries.

ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must be citizens of a country in which there is a Rotary club and have completed at least two years of university coursework or equivalent professional experience prior to beginning scholarship studies. There are no age restrictions. Spouses or descendants of Rotarians may not apply. Other restrictions apply. Scholarship cannot be used to study in an area of a country where the candidate has previously lived for more than six months (the scholarships are not appropriate for foreign students seeking funding to continue studies at a given university), and may not be used in conjunction with a study abroad program based in another country.

National Security Education Program (NSEP)

The NSEP scholarships can be applied to summer, semester or academic year study abroad programs in countries outside Western Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Preference is given to applications for study in geographical areas, languages and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security. Applicants must demonstrate an interest in undertaking serious study (including language study) in foreign countries as a complement to academic and career goals. Awards are for a minimum of one academic term. For juniors and seniors, full academic year programs are preferred and strongly encouraged. Awards vary from the full cost of participation in an established study abroad program (up to $8,000/semester) to partial support based on financial need. At a minimum, an NSEP award will cover round-trip international travel and insurance. All recipients must sign a service agreement.

2005-06 NSEP Boren Scholarship Competition
IIE, a NAFSA Global Partner, is accepting applications for the 2005-06 National Security Education Program (NSEP) David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarship competition. NSEP awards scholarships for study in world regions critical to U.S. interests (including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, Latin America, and the Middle East). The 2005-06 scholarships offer funding for study abroad in summer 2005, fall 2005, spring 2006, and the full 2005-06 academic year. The national deadline is February 10. Bowman Travel Grants
The Bowman Travel Grants provide assistance to students participating in educational programs in non-traditional destinations including Eastern Europe and newly eligible countries in Asia and the Middle East. Funded by the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE or Council), applicants must propose to participate in a study abroad program administered by Council, a member Institution of Council, or a university that has been appointed as an Official International Student Identity Card (ISIC) Issuing Office. The UNI Study Abroad Center is an official ISIC issuing site. DEADLINE: October 23 for spring programs; April 1 for summer, fall and academic year programs.

Golden Key International Honor Society Study Abroad Scholarships

Deadlines: October 15 and April 15

Five US $2,000 awards are presented twice each year to assist members interested in studying abroad. This scholarship assists members who participate in a study abroad program. Five US $2,000 awards will be presented twice each year. 

Eligibility: Those eligible are undergraduate members who are currently enrolled in a study abroad program or who will be enrolled the academic year immediately following the granting of the award. The study abroad program cannot have been completed prior to the application deadline date. Award recipients will be expected to contribute an article about their study abroad experience to CONCEPTS, Golden Key’s annual magazine. 

Criteria: Academic achievement and relevance of study abroad program to major field of study, as determined by the selection committee. 

Application requirements: Post your application on-line at On-Line Application with your Golden Key member number. Print out the Summary Page and Final Checklist from the on-line application and attach to the following documentation as cover pages. Attach a description of the planned academic program at the host university. Submit no more than five pages. Attach a one-page statement of the relevance of this program to your degree signed by a professor or academic advisor. Attach an official academic transcript.

Bridging Scholarships for Study in Japan

The Association of Teacher of Japanese Bridging Project accepts applications from American students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Funding from private foundations and major U.S. corporation has made it possible for ATJ to award 100 scholarships annually to assist students with the travel and living expenses they will incur while studying aboard in Japan.

Awards For Study in Scandinavia 2005-2006

The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) offers fellowships (up to $18,000) and grants (normally $3,000) to individuals to pursue research or study in one or more Scandinavian country for up to one year. Awards are made in all fields.
