Introduction

The course is an introduction to the physical, cognitive and psychological characteristics of development from infancy through adolescence. It examines and describes basic developmental principles, age-stage characteristics, and provisions community, family, and school make in the development of children and youth. The course will combine study of Turkish culture and education system with multiple field trips to education and cultural institutions and sites. Approved for Category 5C in LAC.

Program runs from May 9/10 – May 30/31, 2011

Day 1 (May 9/10) depart from US
Day 2 arrive in Istanbul, immediate area tour by bus, travel to housing, get situated, exchange/withdraw money, get necessities

Day 3-8 Activities by Iowa Dialog Center (3 day tour “Best of Istanbul” + 2 days in Bursa)

Day 9 Return to Istanbul, transfer to housing, get settled, get necessities

Day 10 AM: travel to campus by shuttle, tour of campus, lecture by Dr. Al-Mabuk,
PM: lunch, lecture by Dr. Al-Mabuk or Fatih U. faculty, welcome dinner

Day 11 - ALL DAY Fatih College (School visit)

Day 12 - ALL DAY Fatih College (School visit)

Day 13 AM: lecture Dr. Al-Mabuk or outing), lunch,
PM: cultural activities

$500 (includes: housing for 3 weeks, some meals,including a welcome and farewell meals, program-related cultural activities and local transportation to/from program activities) and remaining meals are approximately $200

Program Cost

UNI tuition for 3 credits and airfare (approx.. $1,200)

Scholarships: Scholarships are available to qualified UNI students from the Study Abroad Center, as well as from several colleges, including CSBS, CBA, and COE. Application deadline is February 15, 2011. Students may apply their financial aid towards the costs of this program only if they are enrolled full-time during summer (5+credits).
