Program City

Arica is a city in the north most part of Chile nestled at the border of Peru, Bolivia and Chile. It has a bustling downtown area and like many cities has its suburbs. It is the driest desert in the world and it barely rains there with .1 inches of rain falling in a year. It is right on the coast and there are lots of opportunities to visit the beaches, surf, swim and enjoy the fruits of the sea. May will be the end of fall in Arica, but the weather there is fairly temperate. The temperature during May/June will likely be in the upper 60s.

Academic Program

It is not necessary to speak Spanish to take this course.

This will be a four week May term course with the first week taught on the UNI campus. Travel will be over the following weekend and three weeks will be spent in Chile in coursework, in visiting schools, and using the comparisons between US and Chilean education as tool for understanding the development and assessment of young children.

Planned excursions will include a 2 day trip to Lake Cucharra in the Andes. On that trip we will also visit rural indigenous schools; the valley of Azapa where we will visit schools, observe agriculture and visit the archeological museum; a tour of Arica and its museums to provide understanding of the city and country.

Students would also be given the opportunity to visit classes on early childhood education in Chile. Students will have opportunities to meet with education faculty and early childhood faculty. Students will visit private schools, rural schools, parochial schools, as well as childcare centers.

Accommodation & Meals

In addition, this program offers the unique opportunity to stay in the home of Chilean families. This moderates the cost but also allows students to get to know the culture and its perspectives more intimately. This allows them opportunities to recognize that what they believed to be “fact” is actually cultural and can be interpreted accurately in a number of ways.

Program Cost

UNI tuition for 3 credits ($1248)
Room and board for 3 weeks ($300)
Excursions ($300)
Flight ($1500)

Approximate total $3.500.
