Attending the summer Capstone in London/Paris is a great way to experience these two historic cities. This short-term, two week program, provides students with the opportunity to learn about the history, society, and culture of the capitals of the United Kingdom and France. London and Paris provide visitors ample sites to see, great food to enjoy, and plenty of fun while there.

Because our history is intimately tied to both the United Kingdom and France, we can gain a better understanding of our own circumstances, by visiting historical and interesting sites in London and Paris. We have heard about and seen pictures of many of the sites we will see on the trip, but this indirect learning in no way compares to visiting and seeing them firsthand. For example, to many students, who previously made this trip, the experience of visiting such sites as Windsor Castle, a resident home of the Queen, and observing Paris from the height of the Eiffel Tower, opened whole new horizons of appreciation and understanding. The British Museum in London, and the Louvre in Paris are examples of some of the most preeminent museums in the world, therefore, we will take advantage of opportunities to visit these and other museums, because they are so valuable to our learning.

Academic Program

Spring Semester Course Activities

In order to prepare us for the trip in May, we will meet for a number of weeks during the spring semester to discuss details of the trip, travel tips, and other helps in making your plans for the trip. During the spring semester you will also develop two paper topics relative to our trip. In one of these papers, you will investigate one of the locations that we will visit on the trip, and then prepare and present an informational presentation to the class so that they are better prepared to understand that location when we actually visit it. You will also research and prepare another topical paper that you will also present to the class. But for this paper you will finish the research by visiting targeted relevant sites abroad, so that you can develop an even better understanding of the topic by seeing the “real” things while on our trip.

Activities After The Trip

During the trip, you will keep notes of activities and sites we visit. These will assist you, when you return, in developing a short response paper on each of the topics that you especially investigated prior to our going. Subsequent to the trip you will also develop a short overview paper over the various aspects, and your responses, to the trip as a whole. We will also hold a debriefing session to assess the trip and evaluate your experiences relative to learning and future trips.

Tales From Abroad

On the Seine River, Paris.
"Being able to say I have experienced another culture on my resume may help me with my job search, as I will be graduating in May. Not to mention, just being able to say I have been to two of the most famous places on Earth. How many people can say they have been to the top of the Eiffel Tower? It was a great experience that I will always remember."
Addie Carpenter, Summer 2011
