Cape Breton University is located in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality (the second largest in the province of Nova Scotia with approximately 109,000 people), 15 minutes from the city centre. Cape Breton Island has long been a favorite tourist destination for both domestic and international travelers and was recently ranked as the #2 Tourist Destination in the World by National Geographic Traveler magazine. Boasting the #1 public golf course in Canada, the world famous Cabot Trail scenic drive, the Highlands National Park, two downhill ski facilities, a number of recreational amenities, beautiful beaches, and a variety of entertainment activities including world-class music, a major-junior hockey franchise, and several playhouses that feature live theatre productions.

Cape Breton University gained the special distinction of being part of one of the most innovative and progressive post-secondary educational institutions in Canada. Cape Breton University features the Sullivan Field House that has basketball courts, a 1/8 mile indoor running track, gymnastics equipment, and badminton and volleyball courts. There is also a fitness area that features weights and cardiovascular machines. There is also a 2,500 seat hockey arena with an Olympic-sized ice surface located in the Canada Games Complex and an outdoor soccer field behind the Cape Breton University residences.

Academic Calendar

Exchange students take a full semester of courses--12 hours or more at Cape Breton. Semester (fall or spring) and academic year options are available. Students remain eligible for UNI financial aid and the Study Abroad Scholarship.

Fall semester: October 1 -January 31;
Christmas break: December 19 - January 7, 2005
No lectures October 10 or November 2, 2005

Semester break: February 1 - 28, 2006

Spring semester: March 1- June 30.?
Easter Holiday: April 10 - 22, 2006
No lectures June 3 or June 6, 2006?

Summer holiday: July 2 - September 30, 2006

Accommodation & Meals

Cape Breton University offers three types of residence accommodations to students in the form of single, double, and apartment style accommodations. Meal plans are offered for students living in the residence halls.

Application Materials

Program Cost

UNI students pay UNI tuition and fees (in-state or out-of-state) plus the study abroad fee to participate. The program cost does not include housing, food, books and supplies, round-trip air transportation (if applicable), international health insurance, and personal expenses.

Students will figure out accommodations through the university.
