National Chengchi University is located in the Wenshan District of Taipei City, Taiwan. Though a bustling city of over 2,600,000 people, Taipei City is surrounded by mountains to the north, east and south, and by water to the west. As a result, it is endowed with unique natural scenery, with lush forests and winding rivers, and a variety of fascinating terrains, including volcanic mountains, foothills, terrace tablelands, coastal plains and river wetlands.

National Chengchi University’s (NCCU) vision is to build a first-rate international humanities and social sciences academic temple, and nurture “Humane, Global, Innovative” successors for the new century, making it very similar to UNI academically. Beyond this, NCCU is known for its Research Center for Mind, Brain and Learning. During the Summer 2012, UNI Biology and Psychology students will have the opportunity to participate in research at this center with NCCU faculty and students, as well as take courses in Chinese language and/or culture at NCCU’s renowned International Summer School.

UNI students will travel to NCCU and stay for 6 weeks. Faculty members from the UNI Departments of Biology and Psychology will travel with the UNI students and stay for one week to get the students settled into the research labs and their accomodations, make sure everything is running smoothly, and meet with faculty and students at NCCU. During the 6 weeks, UNI students will be involved in neuroscience and psychology research for half of the day (opportunities in many areas of biology and psychology are available based on student interests) and will take a Chinese language course for the other half of the day.
This program offers a unique chance for students to participate in scientific research in another country. NCCU offers equipment and research opportunities not available at UNI (e.g., research on dopamine in rats, EKG analyses of sleep patterns, and children with autism), and students work closely with NCCU undergraduate and graduate students and professors who are fluent in English during their stay. In addition, students get to learn a new and very different language in small, fun, interactive classes with other students from around the world.
Students will arrive in Taipei City around June 30, 2013 to begin their research. Chinese Language courses will begin soon after. The program will run for six weeks.There are no classes on Fridays, giving students ample time to explore the many natural wonders, from mountains to hot springs to beaches, in Taiwan.For the duration of the program UNI students will also be interacting with Taiwanese and other international peers at NCCU.
Students will stay in the newly-remodeled I-House on the NCCU campus with other international students studying at the NCCU International Summer School.Students will be on their own for meals. Taipei can be very inexpensive or very expensive, and there are lots of inexpensive restaurants and stores around NCCU, as well as cafeterias on campus. Students may also choose to use the kitchen facility in the I-House.
