This public Japanese university was established in 2004. Located in the suburbs and surrounded by the beautiful nature of northern Japan, Akita International University, AIU, is a window to the world with several programs in international education that satisfy varying academic needs. The university is unique in Japan for offering an International Liberal Arts education entirely in English but also offers Japanese language courses for those interested. AIU is on the cutting edge of Japanese higher education in the area. The majority of international students are from partner institutions from all corners of the globe. These students are studying at Akita International University for one semester or two depending on an individual student’s length of stay.

Program City

Akita International University is located in Akita City (population approx. 325,000), the capital of Akita prefecture (population approx. 1,106,000). The campus is surrounded by the natural beauty of northern Japan, and is easily accessible from downtown Akita City and Akita Airport. Since Japan’s Edo period Akita has played a large role in economic commerce and trade in the Tohoku region of the country. The winters are cold in Akita, but still an escape from Iowa.

Institution

Akita International University is a four-year undergraduate college with a graduate school accredited by the Japanese Ministry of Education which is the sole accreditation agency in Japan. All courses are taught in English aside from the foreign language courses in Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Mongolian, Russian, French, and Spanish. Academic Program

Akita International University's exciting and rigorous academic programs offer opportunities for international students to gain vital and exploratory knowledge about Japan and the world. Undergraduate majors: Global business and Global Studies. Akita International University offers extensive programs in Japan Studies and Japanese Language for international students. 130 subjects are offered at AIU.

Accommodation & Meals

Housing: Akita International University provides a genuine cross-cultural environment for all of its students. students are guaranteed housing in either the Komachi Dormitory, the Global Village Apartments, or the Univeristy Village Apartments.

Dining: The two main dining spaces on campus are the Cafeteria and the College Cafe. The Cafeteria serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner to residential students.
