Advocacy

As funding cuts increase in many areas, advocacy increases in importance. Through advocacy, Colleges Against Cancer organizations lobby for more funding for cancer research, bills to pass regarding smoke-free areas, or any political issue regarding cancer.

FIGHT BACK! This year UNI’s Colleges Against Cancer is implementing our first ever Fight Back Ceremony at our Relay For Life. The Fight Back Ceremony is full of opportunities to encourage students to do what they can to fight cancer. At our Relay For Life, we have a banner that each student signs and makes a pledge to do something that will help decrease chances of cancer for someone. These pledges may be anything from wearing sunscreen when outside to encouraging their mother to get her yearly mammogram. We will also have flags surrounding our track encouraging all students to fight back by having these flags represent the amount of people in our area that will be affected by cancer this year. Our ceremony will also feature a caregiver speaking about their experience and encouraging all students to do whatever we can to make a difference and fight back against cancer.

PICTURE-A-CURE! Along with the Fight Back Ceremony, we will have computers set up at our Relay For Life for students to fill out Picture A Cure. Picture A Cure puts a face on cancer. With the American Cancer Society’s help, students can share their personal stories with our legislators and make our voices heard. Students will fill out the American Cancer Society Picture A Cure form, then write a personal message about how cancer has affected their lives, then attach a personal picture or a picture of their family to the message. We will then mail your form to our lawmakers and send a loud message that we care about stopping cancer, especially tobacco use, for good

Recently, the Statewide Smoke Free Bill has been a focus of the House and Senate. When the bill was created, it eliminated smoking in several public places, reducing the amount of second hand smoke non-smokers would breathe in. Currently, the bill has had many of the places smoking would be eliminated, removed, protecting even less Iowans. If you would like to send a letter to your local legislator letting them know this is unacceptable, please follow this link: Letter to Legislator. It only takes a few minutes, and making your voice heard can really make a difference!
