UNI PROUD is a student organization at the University of Northern Iowa, which is founded on the principles of promoting an inclusive and accepting campus environment for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, and Ally individuals (LGBTIA). The easiest way to get involved is by attending our weekly meetings, Tuesdays at 7pm in the Presidential Room of the Maucker Union (lower level). We also organize and host several events throughout the school year.

Pride Week 2010: EduGAYtion

Spring has arrived, so it is Pride Week once again. Our theme this year is EduGAYtion. UNI is well known for its Education program. Unfortunately, schools and universities have been inadequate in their support for people of different sexual orientations and gender identities, or to their allies. So, one of our goals is to raise awareness about LGBT issues in and around education. Another big aspect of EduGAYtion is simply educating the public about general LGBT issues such as Transgender Rights, and Marriage Equality.

Here is our lineup of events:

  • Sunday, March 28: Sidewalk Chalking (6pm to 7pm, in the Union)
  • Monday, March 29: Panel, EduGAYtion: What do you want to know? (7pm, in Schindler 246)
  • Tuesday, March 30: Nick Pace, Speaker, Learning from Gay and Lesbian students (7pm, in the Lang Auditorium)
  • Wednesday, March 31: Rainbow Bake Sale (10am to 3pm, in the Union, tabling)
  • Wednesday, March 31: Drag Carnival (8pm to 10pm, in the Union)
  • Friday, April 2: Marriage Equality Rally (2pm, outside the Union, the fountain area)
  • Friday, April 2: Bar Takeover (9pm, meet in the Commons horseshoe)
