This play chronicles how the town of Laramie, Wyoming dealt with the brutal assault and murder of Matthew Shephard, who in October 1998, was kidnapped, brutally beaten, tied to a fence, and left to die. Moisés Kaufman and fellow members of the Tectonic Theater Project traveled to Laramie only five weeks after Matthew's death and recorded 200 interviews with residents over the course of a year. Using these as their basis, they created this play. The epilogue was added ten years later when they revisited the town to conduct follow up interviews on how the town dealt with this terrible hate crime.
