   <title>Updated statement on bias</title>

&#13;
Message&#13;
From the Student Body President:&#13;
&#13;
&amp;nbsp;&#13;
&#13;
In the past weeks I've heard students’ concerns&#13;
regarding bias-related incidences on campus. &#13;
&#13;
&amp;nbsp;&#13;
&#13;
Let me start by saying that upon hearing these concerns&#13;
from students, I took immediate action. &amp;nbsp;I met with UNI President Ben&#13;
Allen, Provost Gloria Gibson, Dean of Students Jon Buse, and members of my&#13;
staff and have set up conversations to give students an opportunity to voice&#13;
their concerns.&#13;
&#13;
&amp;nbsp;&#13;
&#13;
&amp;nbsp;I don't&#13;
take this issue lightly and I can assure all students that I care very deeply&#13;
about any incidences where bias or discrimination have been reported against a&#13;
student. I'm committed to bringing students together to address the challenges&#13;
that we face. &#13;
&#13;
&amp;nbsp;&#13;
&#13;
I find the incidents that took place&#13;
on campus, and any act of discrimination for that matter, unacceptable. Diversity&#13;
and gender equality must be encouraged at all levels of university life. The&#13;
UNI community must actively and enthusiastically support inclusiveness,&#13;
openness and understanding. By celebrating diversity and promoting our&#13;
differences we will enhance the quality of student life at UNI and bring all&#13;
students together to encompass the sense of community that UNI offers.&#13;
&#13;
&amp;nbsp;&#13;
&#13;
Acts of discrimination have an adverse effect on&#13;
the educational experience of all students, and it’s up to all of us (students,&#13;
faculty, staff and administration) to ensure that every UNI student has the&#13;
best possible experience while they're here. &#13;
&#13;
&amp;nbsp;&#13;
&#13;
We have our work cut out for us. However, knowing&#13;
that there's work to be done shouldn't be used as an excuse; instead, students&#13;
are responsible for taking control of their campus climate. Neutrality doesn't&#13;
contribute to the overall well-being of students on our campus. Instead,&#13;
neutrality presents itself as a brother of apathy, and stands as an obstacle to&#13;
progress. &#13;
&#13;
&amp;nbsp;&#13;
&#13;
Behavior&#13;
like this cannot and will not be tolerated on our campus. I call&#13;
upon all of you to stand up for your peers. Don't be silent. Let it be known&#13;
that students at UNI will not tolerate discrimination on our campus. &#13;
&#13;
&amp;nbsp;&#13;
&#13;
The Northern Iowa Student Government is committed&#13;
to supporting students; please contact us if you need any assistance in&#13;
reporting incidents or seeking guidance.&#13;
&#13;
&amp;nbsp;&#13;
&#13;
I want to express my strong commitment to&#13;
addressing this issue. Our work doesn't stop here. We'll overcome the challenges&#13;
we're faced with today. It will take all of us working together to resolve this&#13;
issue and I am confident we can do so. &#13;
&#13;

   <title>Statement on bias-related incidents</title>
   <description>From Student Body President Adam Haselhuhn and&#13;
members of the Northern Iowa Student Government Executive Branch:&#13;
In the past week I have heard students concerns regarding bias-related incidences on campus. As Student Body President, it is my responsibility to address students concerns on this issue.&#13;
Let me start by saying that I am taking immediate action. I have already had meetings with Provost Gloria Gibson, Dean of Students Jon Buse, and members of my staff. I do not take this issue lightly and I can assure all students that I care very deeply about any and all incidences where bias or&#13;
discrimination have been reported against a student. I am committed to bringing student organizations together to address the challenges that we face.&#13;
I would like to make known my disdain for the incidents&#13;
that took place last week, and for any act of discrimination on our campus for that matter. When I decided to attend UNI, one of my primary reasons was that I felt welcome.It is the&#13;
responsibility of all members of our campus community to make everyone feel the same way.&#13;
Diversity and gender equality must be encouraged at all levels of university life. The UNI community must actively and enthusiastically support inclusiveness, openness, and understanding. By celebrating diversity and promoting our differences we will enhance the quality of student life at UNI and bring all students together to encompass the sense of community that UNI offers.&#13;
Acts of discrimination have an adverse effect on the education experience of all students, and it up to all of us (students, faculty, staff, and administration) to make sure that every single UNI student has the best possible experience while they are here. This is because UNI is more than a school for us; it is our home. We work, relax, and live right here on or around campus. When our fellow students are affected by discrimination, it truly&#13;
impacts every student and their experience here. Behavior like this cannot and will not be tolerated on our campus. We can’t allow it in our home.&#13;
I call upon all of you to stand up for your peers. NISG is committed to supporting students; please contact us if you need any assistance in reporting incidents or seeking guidance if you are personally affected. &#13;
I want to express my strong commitment to addressing this issue. We will overcome the challenges that we are faced with today. It will take all of us working together to resolve this issue and I am confident we can do so.&#13;

   <title>Diversity First Retreat: a Note from Angel Banks</title>
   <description>Hello Student&amp;nbsp;Leaders and Organizations,&amp;nbsp;My name is&amp;nbsp;Angel&#13;
Banks&amp;nbsp;and I am the Northern Iowa Student Government (NISG) Director of&#13;
Diversity Affairs. NISG is planning its Diversity First Retreat, to be&#13;
held on Sunday, November 15, 2009 from 12-2 p.m. in the Maucker Union&#13;
University Room, as part of the Diversity First Initiative. The&#13;
Diversity First Initiative seeks to show NISG's support for diverse&#13;
student organizations and their unique missions, to promote awareness&#13;
for issues of accessibility and understanding, and to expose the&#13;
student body to the cultural and traditional differences that exist&#13;
within UNI's campus community. &#13;
&#13;
The Diversity First Retreat seeks to promote awareness in the&#13;
areas of disability, race, gender, education, culture, and sexual&#13;
orientation, and attempts to do so through bringing students from&#13;
campus organizations and all walks of life together through a hands-on&#13;
interactive experience. &#13;
&amp;nbsp;If you are interested in assisting with planning and coordination of the Diversity First Retreat, please email banksa@uni.edu&#13;
to confirm at your earliest convenience. If you are not interested in&#13;
planning but would like to attend the event, you are more than welcome&#13;
to&amp;nbsp;reply to banksa@uni.edu&amp;nbsp;to&#13;
RSVP for the event instead. This way, those involved with planning will&#13;
know how many organizations and individuals to expect for the event. I&#13;
look forward to hearing from you soon.&#13;
&amp;nbsp;Thank you,&amp;nbsp;Angel Banks&#13;

   <title>Green Week events</title>
   <description>Green Week, sponsored by Northern Iowa Student Government, will take place October 18-24, 2009. This&#13;
ambitious new program that will entertain, educate and inspire members&#13;
of the UNI community. With invaluable support of several student and&#13;
university organizations, this week has been organized with one common&#13;
purpose: reach out to individual who have not yet considered the&#13;
consequences of environmental ignorance. In addition, this week&#13;
provides a forum for students to voice their concerns for our changing&#13;
planet. Green Week is an opportune time for student groups to showcase&#13;
their support of a healthier planet and their responsible&#13;
decision-making, culminating in the international event Project 350 on&#13;
Saturday. Project 350 will be the tour de force of environmentally&#13;
awakened students, faculty and community members who want to join their&#13;
community members in a show of solidarity that will receive global&#13;
attention. Summary of events:&#13;
&#13;
&#13;
&#13;
Sunday, October 18th&#13;
&#13;
7:00p - Campus&#13;
Conversation – Center for Multicultural&#13;
Education, Plaza level of Union&#13;
&#13;
There is no greater way to begin a week of investigation,&#13;
education, and involvement than with a simple conversation. This conversation&#13;
is the perfect opportunity for every person, regardless of past experience, to&#13;
voice his or her concerns, ask questions; or simply sit back, relax, and&#13;
listen. From tenured professors to the youngest freshman, all are encouraged to&#13;
come with an open mind. Maybe you’ve seen some trash problems that have really&#13;
been bothering you, or maybe you want to know what the university plans on&#13;
doing to become more sustainable while still cutting costs. Maybe you’ll hear&#13;
from someone that shares the same concerns or has the same ideas you do! The&#13;
Campus Conversation is where you’ll want to be Sunday, October 18th&#13;
at PM!&#13;
&#13;
Monday, October 19th&#13;

less energy, and is an easy step towards a healthy environment. The DOR&#13;
Programming Board is making it easy for you to make the small changes, so stop&#13;

solutions to complicated problems. Sustainability in Action will be held at 10&#13;
AM in the Center for Multicultural Education.&#13;

the ignorant. Between stirring performances the audience will learn the history&#13;
of environmentalism, the Earth’s current plight, and what we may do to steer&#13;
our world towards a brighter future. Come with an open mind, and leave with a&#13;
greater respect for the Earth. Speaking of Change will be held at 7 PM in the&#13;

fun, leisurely way to become acquainted with environmentally friendly living.&#13;
You may even find a new way to become involved on campus, all while passing&#13;
between classes or over lunch!&#13;

and concern for a healthier planet in an action as easy as walking, actually,&#13;
it is just walking! So show up, bring some friends, grab some food, show your&#13;

earth. Project 350 is supported by 350.org, an international organization whose&#13;
focus is on changing the climate policy of world leaders. On this day, over&#13;
1600 events in over 125 countries are going to be occurring all over the world,&#13;
and UNI will be a part of the action! Those who come to the McLeod Center will&#13;
arrange themselves on the bleachers to form the number 350. The more people&#13;
that take part in this amazing program, the more coverage UNI will receive form&#13;
the international community! This will be a once in a lifetime event, and you&#13;
will be sad if you miss this opportunity! The official Project 350 picture will&#13;

   <title>NISG meetings now available for viewing</title>
   <description>University of Northern Iowa students are now able to watch Northern Iowa Student Government (NISG) Senate meetings online and on local cable channels.

&quot;We are excited to be able to record and broadcast NISG Senate meetings this semester,” says NISG Vice President Clarence Lobdell. “Recording these meetings provides employment for student workers, increased outreach from NISG to the Cedar Valley, accountability for the decisions made by NISG on behalf of the student body, and transparency in allocating student funds. We hope that students, faculty, staff, and the Cedar Valley community use these recordings as a resource to keep abreast of what’s happening both on and off campus and to contact us to make their voices heard if they have any concerns about what we are currently, or should be doing.”

Students can access a new recording every Thursday on the web at www.nisgtv.com, on Mediacom television channel 18, and Cedar Falls Utilities television channel 99.

The television schedule is Mondays at 9:00 PM, Tuesdays at 10:00 PM, Wednesdays at 7:00 PM, Thursdays at 6:00 PM, and Fridays at 8:00 PM.

NISG has partnered with the ITS Production House and University Book &amp; Supply to offer this service to students and the community. According to University Book &amp; Supply President Rose Lorenz, “UBS is supporting the broadcast of the NISG senate meetings, because it adds value to both UNI and the community. We are pleased to give back to students in a way that helps them be more informed while providing the community an opportunity to see the significance and positive impact of UNI in our community.”

NISG Senate meets every Wednesday at 7:00 PM in Maucker Union Ballroom C and meetings are open to the public. Students, faculty, staff, and community members are encouraged to watch or attend.

   <title>Welcome to our new website!</title>
   <description>Northern Iowa Student Government (NISG) has launched a new Web site to better communicate with UNI students. The Web site features an updated, more easy to navigate interface, improved services and new features. To see the new website, visit http://www.uni.edu/nisg/.

According to NISG President Pernell Cezar, the new NISG Web site is part of a larger focus of outreach towards the UNI student body. &amp;quot;When Clarence and I ran for office, we told students that we would be building tools for them so they can easily communicate with us. This new Web site is just one of those tools.&amp;quot;

The new Web site also features the launch of NISG podcasts, a bi-weekly audio or video that addresses what is happening in NISG as well as other matters that directly affect students. Students can download and stream the podcasts, as well as subscribe to them in iTunes.

NISG has integrated a site-wide search into the Web site, allowing students to search for anything on the Web site including senator information, news articles, Panther Shuttle hours and more.

The launch of the NISG Web site is the first stage of a multiple stage project. &amp;quot;The new NISG Web site is a foundation that we can build upon in upcoming months, even years,&amp;quot; says Brandon Neil, NISG director of public relations. &amp;quot;We have got some exciting modules that will be going live later this year.&amp;quot;

   <title>UNI prepares to host the Dalai Lama</title>
   <description>&#13;
The 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet has accepted an invitation from the University of Northern Iowa to visit campus for a day of celebrating education and the pursuit of knowledge. UNI is working with the Dalai Lama's North American Representatives to secure a date.&#13;
&#13;
&amp;quot;It is a great honor to have the Dalai Lama accept our invitation to spend time on campus and share his views on the educational values shared by him and UNI,&amp;quot; said UNI President Benjamin Allen. &amp;quot;During an audience with the Dalai Lama this summer I was very impressed by his compassion, his humanity and humility and his directness. His presence at UNI will have an impact that lasts long beyond his visit.&#13;
&#13;
&#13;
&amp;quot;We are aware of the Dalai Lama's health concerns, and our plans will depend on his health and decisions from his office. We remain hopeful that the Dalai Lama will visit UNI within the next few years.&amp;quot;&#13;
&#13;
The Dalai Lama is the head of state and the spiritual leader of Tibet, living in exile in Dharamsala, India. He is well known as a humanitarian and an advocate of peace. In 1989, he received the Nobel Peace Prize.&#13;
&#13;
UNI extended a formal invitation to the Dalai Lama in February 2007, recognizing a shared value in education and support for Tibetan education. Since 1994, UNI has had a relationship with The Tibet Fund, supporting scholarships for Tibetan students to study at UNI. Twenty-six Tibetan students have received scholarships to study at UNI through this partnership, the majority of whom enroll in programs in UNI's College of Education.&#13;
&#13;
&amp;quot;Our Tibetan students have been active on campus and found opportunities to share their culture in the classroom and community. They truly appreciate their education,&amp;quot; said Kristi Marchesani, UNI assistant director of admissions/international relations. &amp;quot;I see many further opportunities for them to share their worldviews as we prepare for the Dalai Lama's visit.&amp;quot;&#13;
&#13;
Details of the visit and pre- and post-visit events and activities will be finalized after the event date is set. Jan Hanish, UNI assistant vice president of outreach &amp;amp; special programs, will lead a steering committee to be named in the coming weeks.&#13;
&#13;
&#13;
&amp;quot;The focus will be on education in an increasingly global society, the role of education in developing socially responsible citizens and the impact an individual can have on the world,&amp;quot; Hanish said. &amp;quot;We want to involve all of UNI's colleges and departments and community members of all ages as we prepare for the Dalai Lama's visit. We have been given a special opportunity to learn more about arts, culture, world religions, politics, peace and the 14th Dalia Lama of Tibet who is considered one of the great world leaders.&#13;
&#13;
A Web site is under construction. Watch for further announcements and links at www.uni.edu.&#13;
&#13;

   <description>CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Complete textbook information for fall 2008 classes at the University of Northern Iowa is now available at PantherSupply.com. The Northern Iowa Student Government (NISG) has partnered with University Book and Supply to offer textbook information 14-30 days before classes begin.

Students can go to the PantherSupply.com, and follow the &amp;quot;textbooks&amp;quot; link. Once there, pick the Fall 2008 term from the drop-down menu and enter your class information.

   <description>The Panther Shuttle will continue its regular route. However, detours may vary throughout the time of construction and the shuttle drivers will take the best available route to remain timely. The route times may have minor delays and riders are encouraged to plan ahead.
