NISG Students Lobby at Iowa State Capitol

Ten students from the Northern Iowa Student Government traveled to the Iowa State Capitol on Feb. 4 to meet with state representatives. Those involved met with numerous representatives to spread two messages: thanking the Iowa Legislature and asking for its support of higher education.

Student Body President Adam Haselhuhn and Vice President Jake Rudy also attended the Board of Regents meeting in Ames. The Board approved a 6 percent increase for tuition in 2010-2011. Regents Michael Gartner and Ruth Harkin voted against the measure. The Board voted unanimously to conditionally rescind this year's $100 tuition surcharge. The surcharge was approved in December in reaction to the governor's 10 percent across-the-board cut to all state-funded organizations. The resolution will only take place if the Iowa Legislature approves Governor Chet Culver's measure to restore $30.4 million to the universities' general education fund. Questions about the Board's decisions can be sent to nisg@uni.edu.
