Discusses
the student loan debt by state and where Iowa ranks in comparison.
Key
points from student debt studies…
On
average, students who attend a public university in Iowa graduate
with $23,198 of debt. This amount ranks amongst the highest in the
country, compared to $11,000 among public university undergraduates
who graduate with the least amount of student debt.
According
to a U.S. Government Accountability Office report, textbooks have
risen at twice the rate of inflation over the last 20 years.
Because
of issues such as high student loan debt upon graduation, Iowa is a
leading exporter of college graduates. This problem will have an
impact on Iowa’s projected worker shortage of 150,000 employees
to take place in the year 2012. The state of Iowa only has 3,000,000
citizens, causing a potential crisis if our legislators do not take
action to correct the worker shortage a top priority.

comments, questions, or concerns that you would like to address
regarding student legislative efforts may be voiced by emailing NISG.
