Updated statement on bias

November 19, 2009

Message From the Student Body President:

In the past weeks I've heard students’ concerns regarding bias-related incidences on campus.

Let me start by saying that upon hearing these concerns from students, I took immediate action.  I met with UNI President Ben Allen, Provost Gloria Gibson, Dean of Students Jon Buse, and members of my staff and have set up conversations to give students an opportunity to voice their concerns.

I don't take this issue lightly and I can assure all students that I care very deeply about any incidences where bias or discrimination have been reported against a student. I'm committed to bringing students together to address the challenges that we face.

I find the incidents that took place on campus, and any act of discrimination for that matter, unacceptable. Diversity and gender equality must be encouraged at all levels of university life. The UNI community must actively and enthusiastically support inclusiveness, openness and understanding. By celebrating diversity and promoting our differences we will enhance the quality of student life at UNI and bring all students together to encompass the sense of community that UNI offers.

Acts of discrimination have an adverse effect on the educational experience of all students, and it’s up to all of us (students, faculty, staff and administration) to ensure that every UNI student has the best possible experience while they're here.

We have our work cut out for us. However, knowing that there's work to be done shouldn't be used as an excuse; instead, students are responsible for taking control of their campus climate. Neutrality doesn't contribute to the overall well-being of students on our campus. Instead, neutrality presents itself as a brother of apathy, and stands as an obstacle to progress.

Behavior like this cannot and will not be tolerated on our campus. I call upon all of you to stand up for your peers. Don't be silent. Let it be known that students at UNI will not tolerate discrimination on our campus.

The Northern Iowa Student Government is committed to supporting students; please contact us if you need any assistance in reporting incidents or seeking guidance.

I want to express my strong commitment to addressing this issue. Our work doesn't stop here. We'll overcome the challenges we're faced with today. It will take all of us working together to resolve this issue and I am confident we can do so.

From Student Body President Adam Haselhuhn and members of the Northern Iowa Student Government Executive Branch:

In the past week I have heard students concerns regarding bias-related incidences on campus. As Student Body President, it is my responsibility to address students concerns on this issue.

Let me start by saying that I am taking immediate action. I have already had meetings with Provost Gloria Gibson, Dean of Students Jon Buse, and members of my staff. I do not take this issue lightly and I can assure all students that I care very deeply about any and all incidences where bias or discrimination have been reported against a student. I am committed to bringing student organizations together to address the challenges that we face.

I would like to make known my disdain for the incidents that took place last week, and for any act of discrimination on our campus for that matter. When I decided to attend UNI, one of my primary reasons was that I felt welcome. It is the responsibility of all members of our campus community to make everyone feel the same way.

Diversity and gender equality must be encouraged at all levels of university life. The UNI community must actively and enthusiastically support inclusiveness, openness, and understanding. By celebrating diversity and promoting our differences we will enhance the quality of student life at UNI and bring all students together to encompass the sense of community that UNI offers.

Acts of discrimination have an adverse effect on the education experience of all students, and it up to all of us (students, faculty, staff, and administration) to make sure that every single UNI student has the best possible experience while they are here. This is because UNI is more than a school for us; it is our home. We work, relax, and live right here on or around campus. When our fellow students are affected by discrimination, it truly impacts every student and their experience here. Behavior like this cannot and will not be tolerated on our campus. We can’t allow it in our home.

I call upon all of you to stand up for your peers. NISG is committed to supporting students; please contact us if you need any assistance in reporting incidents or seeking guidance if you are personally affected.

I want to express my strong commitment to addressing this issue. We will overcome the challenges that we are faced with today. It will take all of us working together to resolve this issue and I am confident we can do so.
