Money for Student Organizations

Budget Process

  • Budget Process Informational Meeting January 27th
  • Budget Packets due February 16th, please send as an email attachment to the Director of Administration
  • Finalized budget emailed to each student organization April 20th-24th 2009

Below you'll find information that may be helpful when submitting budget requests. For full documentation of the process, revew the NISG Funding and Recognition Guidelines, also available in PDF .

Funding for the following items are requested through the areas outside of NISG, and should not be included with your request:
  • Travel to conferences, conference registration fees, and accommodations at conferences are funded through the Intercollegiate Academic Fund, which is funded with your student activity fees. Information can be found here.

  • Travel, honorarium, publicity, and accommodations for visiting speakers/entertainers are funded by the Student Organization Speakers Fund and Entertainment Committee, which are funded with your student activity fees. Information can be found at the SIAC website.

  • If your program relates to diversity, you are eligible to apply for a grant from the Student Support Fund for up to $300 as a part of the Center for Multicultural Diversity. Information can be found at the CME website.

HELPFUL HINTS ON THE BUDGET PROCESS
  1. Start early!! Give yourself plenty of time to make certain your budget is complete and accurate before you finalize the submission.

  2. If you are requesting money for printing here are some figures:
    • Copies - .07 (White Paper), .09 (Colored Paper) at Print Services

    • Colored Copies - 1-49 .75, 50-99 .65, 100-499 .55 at Print Services

    • Table tents usually fit two per page. Number of table tents needed:
      Maucker Union - 135
      Piazza - 60
      Rialto - 60

    • Ads in the Northern Iowan: $3.90/inch (i.e. 2x5 ad = $39.00)
      Quarter page $81.90
      Half page $146.25
      Full page $292.50
      ***The Committee will rarely fund more than a quarter page***

  3. If you are requesting money for supplies (i.e. yard waste bags, video tapes, decorations) please get estimates from a local vendor (i.e. Wal-Mart).

  4. If you are requesting money for technical support, room rental, etc. please get quotes from the facility hosting the event (i.e. Maucker Union, Lang Hall, GBPAC, UNI-Dome, etc).

  5. If you are requesting money for specific items (i.e. costumes, films, etc.) please bring direct quotes from the company.

  6. Make sure a knowledgeable member of your organization attends the hearing. Members of the Organization and Finance committee will be asking specific questions concerning your money request.

  7. The number of members in your organization is not important. We look at the number of students directly benefiting from the activity and the nature of the benefit.

  8. Priority is given to those programs or activities which are co-funded by the sponsoring student organization. Activities receiving a commitment or resources from the sponsoring organization are more likely to take place and be well organized because the people putting on the program have invested in it themselves.

  9. If your organization submitted a budget last year, do not merely rewrite last year's budget. Do not artificially inflate your requests! Honestly examine your organization's legitimate needs. Be as honest and realistic as possible with your proposals.

  10. Please read and follow the funding criteria and evaluation closely. If you are requesting something outside the guidelines, state specifically why you believe an exception should be made for your organization.
