Panther Kick-Off

By: Carl Reitz on Wed, 08/20/2014 - 12:44

Hello Panthers!

The first day of the 2014-15 school year is less than a week away! As you're moving in and getting settled, remember to check out all of the Welcome Week activities scheduled to begin Thursday, Aug. 21.

A new tradition is being started this year with the Panther Kick-Off. All first-year and new transfer students are invited to the Kick-Off on Sunday, Aug. 24. On-campus students should meet in your residence hall; off-campus students should meet in the Wellness/Recreation Center (by Outdoor Rec) at 4:30 p.m. to pick up your free t-shirt and walk over to the McLeod Center. At the Panther Kick-Off you'll meet President Ruud, learn the UNI Fight Song and Interlude Dance, and be a part of the entering class photo. Visit the Welcome Week website for the full list of events.

This school year, Paul and I are pushing to expand an initiative known as "Panther Fridays" on campus. On Fridays, students, faculty and staff are encouraged to wear purple as a campus-wide showing of school pride. I want high school students to be blown away by a sea of purple as they visit campus. We want this sight to make an impact on the college decision-making process. As students, you'll be able to win prizes and gifts if Paul and I catch you wearing a special purple item each Friday. Whether its a shirt supporting Panther football or purple socks, you'll be able to find clues hinting at the special purple item on Facebook and Twitter ("Northern Iowa Student Government" and @NISG). You can expect to see a big social media push this fall about #PantherFridays and I encourage you to take part!

As always, if you have any questions or concerns I encourage you to reach out to me via email (gartmank@uni.edu) or office phone (319-273-2651).

See you all soon!

Panther Shuttle Update

By: Carl Reitz on Wed, 08/20/2014 - 12:41

Hello Panthers!

It is with great excitement that I type the words "welcome back" as I look forward to seeing you all on campus in less than two weeks! To all incoming freshmen and transfer students, campus is excited for your arrival this fall and I look forward to seeing you again after speaking with you at orientation. My name is Kevin Gartman - a senior business teaching major from Waukee, Iowa - and I am your student body president for the 2014-15 school year.

With costs constantly rising, it is my priority to keep student fees controlled. My vice president, Paul Andersen, and I have been hard at work this summer to refine the Panther Shuttle while keeping costs down for students. There are a few changes to the Panther Shuttle that you can expect this fall:

  • With many concerns voiced about the Panther Shuttle running late, we have redesigned a new 35-minute route that should consistently run on-time. The new schedule will be shown on the bus stop signs which will be updated before school starts.

  • Two new sponsors have been added to help keep the Panther Shuttle financially stable. I am excited to work with Hillcrest Park Apartments and University Mills Apartments this year.

  • With the addition of this new sponsorship, a new stop will be made at the Hillcrest Apartment clubhouse so students can wait inside for the shuttle during cold or other poor weather conditions.

  • Unfortunately, we were unable to secure a sponsorship from Campus Court Apartments so the Panther Shuttle will no longer be stopping there. The weekend SafeRide will not be affected.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns I encourage you to reach out to me via email (gartmank@uni.edu) or office phone (319-273-2651).

See you all soon!
