Our Big Meetings: These bi-weekly meetings are for the entire group and are a great place to get involved. The purpose of these is to keep all of our volunteers informed about current events, as well as sign up for new fundraisers and activities. To attend one of these meetings, just show up in Sabin 103.
Our Construction Dates: A group of volunteers works on an actual construction site here in the Cedar Valley. The team usually meets in the Lang Hall A lot early in the morning and is then led to the site by our construction coordinator, Kelsie.
Shantytown: Shantytown is an annual event for our campus chapter. It has in the past taken place near the end of the spring semester, usually the last few weeks of April. The event’s purpose is to raise awareness about not only our group, but also what Habitat for Humanity is all about. The evening kicks off with construction of many, some more elaborate than others, cardboard ‘homes’. Each participating person gets several sheets of cardboard and duct tape from which they are to construct the best home possible. We usually try to reserve a spot for our little ‘town’ somewhere in the center of campus, such as Lawther Field. After the construction of the cardboard homes is over, we usually entertain ourselves with games pertaining to limited income and often there are speakers with first-hand experiences about what it is like to be homeless. The games and activities usually last well into the evening and at about midnight, the time comes to put your house to the test. With nothing but a sleeping bad and pillow, each person crawls into their ‘home’ and tries to get to sleep. When morning does arrive, there is a time for reflection of the evening’s experiences, as well as the cleanup. Shantytown has always been our most popular event to raise awareness. It draws a large crowd and really gets people to be involved. Stay posted for this year’s date so you can experience the homeless lifestyle for just one night.
Collegiate Challenge is an alternative Spring Break program coordinated with chapters all over the country. Basically the event is open to college chapters, and for the week of their spring break, they get to spend that time working with a chapter in a region of their choice. For example, in spring of 2005, our chapter sent several students to Colorado. Students began construction on a home with only the outside walls up. At the end of the week, the group had completed, with the help and supervision of the local chapter, the roof, walls, insulation, windows, and porch. It was quite an accomplishment. The location of Collegiate Challenge changes every year and is somewhat up to the individuals going. This year instead of going on Collegiate Challenge we will have other chapters from around the U.S. come to Cedar Falls, and help us with our house. |
