Community Service
Small opportunities are often the beginning of great enterprises.
-- Demosthenes
The Greek community provides services to more than just its members. One of the many advantages of being part of the Greek community is the time spent helping others. During the academic school year and summer Greeks sponsor many community service activities; these activities, known as philanthropies, can involve members from one chapter or all members of the Greek community, working side by side to lend a helping hand.
Traditionally fraternity and sorority chapters support Jamie and Jim's Kids during the Greek Week philanthropy. Jamie and Jim's Kids is a non-profit organization through Mix 96.1FM which sends terminally ill children to Disney World for an experience they'll never forget. Chapters participate in activities such as the annual Haunted House, Penny Wars, Date Auctions and other events to raise money for the cause.
The members of the Greek Community at UNI also participate in numerous philanthropic events each year. These events include a walk for breast cancer research, Walk America, Up 'Til Dawn, Special Olympics, American Red Cross, UNI Bone Marrow Registry, PUSH America, and the Ronald McDonald House.
