UNI-ACS Student Affiliates Constitution



UNI-SAACS Constitution Maintained by ACS Secretary CONSTITUTION Prepared by Dane Jacobson, Treasurer (2004-2005) Preamble: We, the members of the University of Northern Iowa Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society, in order to form a more perfect student organization do ordain and establish this Constitution. Section I: This organization is officially called the University of Northern Iowa Chapter of the Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society, however, in speech and common usage it will be referred to simply as "UNI-SAACS". Section II: The primary purpose of this organization is to provide for students interested in chemistry - predominately those students who have chosen their majors or minors within the discipline of chemistry - a group of individuals of like interests, and together build character the of the individual members, the group, and to help share chemistry with the UNI campus and the community at large. These goals will be accomplished by the organization of regular group meetings, various social events, participation in educational and professional development activities, and participation in community outreach programs. Section III. Officers of ACS will be as follows: 1. President 2. Vice-President 3. Treasurer 4. Secretary 5. Social Chair. Section IV. Membership to the UNI-SAACS will be determined annually based on a point system. Examples of how points will be awarded include attendance at regular meetings, seminars offered by the Chemistry Department, social events, community outreach events, campus or departmental sponsored events presentation at a national conference, or for becoming a student affiliate member of the National American Chemical Society. At the end of the year, members whose point total is above a set amount, determined yearly by a ratio of the highest points earned, will be allowed to vote in the election of the following year's officers. Any UNI student with an interest in the discipline of chemistry is invited to any UNI-SAACS sanctioned event on a probationary status. Only after a full year of participation and achievement of the minimum number of points can one become a full, voting member of the UNI-SAACS. Section V. President: The function of the President is to maintain order in among the group of officers, plan organization events, make final decisions when opinions are split, delegate scenario-specific tasks to members of the UNI-SAACS, work with faculty, and receive permission and signatures from the faculty sponsor as needed. Vice President: The role of the Vice President is to provide assistance to the President as needed, and to fulfill tasks delegated by the President to others that have not been completed in a timely manner. Treasurer: The responsibilities of the Treasurer are to maintain allocated funds, maintain the balance sheet for honors system concession sales, keep up to date with the funds available in the bank account, and deposit cash and checks from the sale of supplies such as goggles, lab notebooks, model kits, T-shirts, and concessions. Secretary: The role of the Secretary will be to keep track of attendance at organization events (hereby keeping track of points obtained by each member), take down the minutes at each meeting, and maintain, or find a person capable of maintaining, the web page. Social Chair: The task of the Social Chair is to coordinate and advertise UNI-SAACS events. This includes the hanging of signs in compliance with Campus rules and regulations for student organizations, the distribution of e-mail over the UNI-SAACS. If officers are unable to fulfill their above-mentioned duties, they are required to find a suitable temporary or permanent replacement. All officers must be student affiliate members of the National American Chemical Society as required by that organization of all SAACS chapters. Section VI. In order to ratify this Constitution, a unanimous decision must be reached by the current officers as well as a sixty percent majority of current members. All members present must vote and sixty percent must approve this constitution. Reading of this constitution will take place at a minimum of two meeting prior to the voting meeting and the document has been posted on-line and can be read by members at any time. In order to amend this document, the same standards must be reached, but fifty percent of the voting members must cast a ballot and with approval by a seventy percent majority obtained. Section VII. Financing will be taken care of by the sale of concessions, lab notebooks, goggles, and model kits, as well as funds allocated by the Department of Chemistry. For Constitutional By-Laws, see appendix A. Of additional note, "Roberts Rules of Order" will be followed unless it is superceded by this constitution.
