Bartlett Energy Saving Team 2005-06
In 2005-6 this group of students led the energy reduction efforts for Bartlett Hall at the University of Northern Iowa. Each student represented one of the eight houses in the residence hall of 325 students. They met
weekly with project facilitators to develop student-led activities
to encourage and educate their peers to reduce energy use in their residence hall rooms and common areas. They received a $200 stipend
at the end of the second semester.

Energy Team Activities
100 Grand Rea$on$ to reduce energy use!
Energy reps handed out cards with 100 Grand candy bars attached to Bartlett Hall students. The card helped develop project awareness in the residence hall and encouraged other to join the Energy Team. At the same time, 100 Grand flyers were posted with some reasons for students to reduce energy use.

“Turn off the heat and wrap up in fleece”
Student Energy reps decided to make eight fleece blankets and have a drawing of one person residence house. The slogan was “turn off the heat and wrap up in fleece.”
Posters were made and displayed in numerous visible areas around the residence hall. Energy reps told their house about the drawing at a house meeting, gave students a chance to put their name in a drawing, and talked a little about ways to reduce energy use.
The drawing was held at an all-House Thanksgiving dinner. Before the drawing, students were encouraged to sign up. Energy reps drew names and eight students won fleece blankets. Winners’ pictures were posted and used to publicize/promote the energy reduction project.

Energy Party – “Get energized for finals!”
Energy reps planned an Energy Party the week before finals, again to gain more project visibility. Incentives to attend were free food and pop (ALWAYS a good incentive for college students), games, and meeting other Bartlett students interested in energy use were incentives.

Ice Breaker Energy Game
On a sheet of paper divided into squares, list an energy related activity /fact in each square. Students are asked to circulate the room and find someone who has done the activity and will sign their name in the square.

Bean Bag Toss
Bean Bag Toss to hit a “target” that was a huge light bulb drawn on poster board that said “turn it off.” Candy prizes.
Screw in the Light Bulb
(Like pin the tail on the donkey) – One student wears a blindfold and holds a light bulb; another student holds a light bulb socket. The blindfolded student is spun around and around and then tries to screw in the light bulb into the socket. More candy prizes!
Energy Factoids
Between games, true/false energy questions were asked that related to the ways students use energy in their rooms, i.e. computer use, appliance use, turning lights off, turning down the heat, turning off water when brushing teeth.
Candy Bar Introductions
Each student was given a small candy bar of 8 kinds (depending on the number of students and group sizes you want.) They had to find the other students with the same kind of candy bar, form a group, introduce themselves, and tell an idea they’ve done or seen someone do to reduce energy in Bartlett Hall.
Food
After several games, students ate free pizza and pop. Students learned about the project and could sign up to participate second semester and receive a stipend if they participated all semester. Energy Reps talked with other students about getting involved in the project, why they support reducing energy use in their residence hall, and what actions they take to reduce their energy use.
Energy Hero T-Shirts
Students design t-shirts for the Energy! project for energy
representatives, research assistants, and project organizers.
The purpose is greater visibility and credibility in the
residence hall. Energy reps wear them when they visit rooms
for the Energy! Challenge, when
they go to house pizza parties, and to meetings. Shirt 1 was
for the project in Dancer Hall and Shirt 2 was for Bartlett Hall.
