Dan Schofield has been honored as College Admissions Professional of the Year by the Iowa Association for College Admissions Counseling (Iowa ACAC) at the group’s 2011 Spring Conference.  Six college admissions counselors are nominated each year; an on-line voting process involving the statewide membership selects the winner.

Iowa ACAC has as its primary purpose to establish and maintain high ethical standards in the relations of members of colleges to each other and to cooperate with secondary school officials in developing a more effective program of pre-college guidance.

Dan has been at UNI for 25 years.  He gains professional fulfillment from the opportunity to work with prospective students.  He thrives on the fact that no two days are alike, “There is no ‘routine day’ – each day brings new interactions with students, parents, counselors, faculty, athletes and colleagues from across the state and beyond,” he said.

Christie Kangas, Director of Admissions, considers Dan’s professional standards to be a good model for others.  “He is a genuinely empathetic person who looks at each situation individually, listens to the story, looks at the circumstances and then makes the decision. The result might be a very informed decision to give someone a chance to pursue their dreams. When the result is a decision that disappoints the student, Dan skillfully delivers the message in a way the individual hears both the ‘no’ and the opportunity for the future,” she said.

Dan’s integrity made him an excellent candidate for this award, said Kangas, “Dan is a man of integrity who understands the importance of standards.  This integrity is integral to his decision-making.  It is also a key part of his mentoring of new staff and his supervision of interns and practicum students.”
