Volunteer Tuesdays is valuable outreach activity for students and community organizations

Posted on Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

Every Tuesday, the Student Leadership Center, in cooperation with the Volunteer Center of Cedar Valley, has organized opportunities for students to get into the local communities and volunteer. Each week, a different community agency will be served so students can get a broad experience with agencies in the Cedar Falls/Waterloo area that need our help. Volunteers have been to the Cedar Valley Arboretum, Grout Museum District, and the Northeast Iowa Foodbank.  The Catholic Worker House, Aspire Therapeutic Riding Program and Seeds of Hope will also benefit from student volunteers this semester.

Students select the dates and times to volunteer and sign up on the leadership center website.  The Student Leadership Center will provide transportation, beverages and snacks.  Participants get free t-shirts to promote volunteering.

Student feedback includes appreciation for the transportation which is a barrier for many student s who want to volunteer off campus.  One participant stated, “Volunteer Tuesdays are a great way to spend some of my free time doing something useful for others.”  Participants recommend it as a great way to help others while meeting other student volunteers.

Volunteer Tuesdays is organized by Steffoni Smith, Graduate Assistant in the Student Leadership Center.
