The Meteorological Decision Support Research component has focused on the topic of air quality, and how it relates specifically to Iowa. In 2003 -2004, STORM sponsored research focused on quantifying the odor disperson around and near hog confinements in Iowa. Currently, research focusing on atmospheric aerosols, particularly particulate matter (PM2.5), is being conducted by the staff and two graduate students. One project's goal is to correlate measurements taken by satellite with surface-based monitors of particulate matter, and to compare and quantify features of the atmospheric boundary layer to the concentration of particulate matter. A second project seeks to quantify the total budget of particulate matter in the atmosphere over Iowa. The WRF/Chem numerical weather and chemistry model is being run in-house in support of this project. Future research and teaching is planned in the area of air quality. For more information about our research, or the STORM Project in general, contact Prof. Alan Czarnetzki.
