II C. - DATA RECORDING TECHNIQUES


Clinical Observation refers to structured, intense, systematic viewing and recording or significant information about classroom environments and events that have been observed in a nonjudgmental way. Below are a list of data recording techniques you may choose to use to collect information about events in the classroom.

DATA RECORDING TECHNIQUES:

Tallying
Tally marks are made to note frequency of a behavior or event.

Listing
One or two word descriptors to point out patterns, variety, consistencies or inconsistencies.

Coding
Abbreviations, initials or other short cuts to speed up recording detailed events.

Scripting
Word for word accounts of targeted events.

Anecdotal Recordings
Short, ordered narrative of events are written in the recorder’s own words.

Timing
A watch is used to determine the exact times certain behaviors or events occur.

Mapping
Diagrams, models or other pictorials are used to locate and describe an event or behavior.

Combinations
Using two or more of the above techniques together to document the occurrence of an event or behavior.
