II B. - FOCUS QUESTIONS FOR OBSERVING IN THE FIELD EXPERIENCE


Below are some questions you can use to help focus your observations during your field experience. You might also ask your PLS supervising teacher to respond to some of these questions if you cannot answer them for yourself through inference and observation.

 

Classroom Management

      • What preventive strategies did the teacher employ to maintain classroom control?
      • What intervention strategies did the teacher employ to maintain classroom control?
      • Which students were easily drawn off task?
      • What techniques did the teacher use to help them focus on the task?
      • How did the physical setting of the room support strong classroom management

       

Motivation

      • Did the activities / presentation of material engage students’ interest?
      • What evidence do you have that this is so?
      • Were the activities and materials in the lesson appropriately challenging?
      • What evidence do you have that this is so?
      • Did the teacher appeal to the intrinsic motivation of students? If so, describe how.
      • Did the teacher use extrinsic motivators while working with students? If so, describe how.

 

Teaching/Learning

  • Were the objectives of the lesson clearly identifiable? How did this contribute to student learning?
  • Did the lesson activities relate well to the lesson objectives? How did this contribute to student learning?
  • How did the lesson fit with the previous lesson? The curriculum as a whole?
  • Was the lesson ending appropriate?
  • Was ample time provided for closure?
