I C. - SCHEDULING THE FIELD EXPERIENCE PLACEMENT

In the first two weeks of the semester, you will register for placement at PLS during one of your 200:148 classes. At this time, you will state your preferences regarding grade-level and subject matter. A faculty member from the Department of Educational Psychology/Foundations will be present during the registration process and will assist you in selecting an appropriate class for your experience.

Every attempt will be made to accommodate your preferences. However, not every 200:128 student can be placed where/when they prefer. Often 200:128 students’ schedules of classes and other activities around which the field experience must be accommodated make this difficult. When you are matched with a PLS supervising teacher, you will be notified by your 200:148 professor. This usually occurs around the third week of the semester. You will then have an opportunity to meet with the PLS supervising teacher prior to the beginning of the field experience during the PLS orientation meeting held in the second or third week in the semester. This is an excellent time to discuss a variety of issues with the teacher responsible for your field experience. The date and time of this orientation is in the schedule book and you will be reminded by your 200:148 professor. You need to make every effort to attend this orientation. If you still have questions or concerns regarding your placement after the orientation, you should contact the Department of Educational Psychology/Foundations (273-7886).

In addition to being assigned a PLS supervising teacher, you will also be assigned a time slot. The 200:128 field experience for elementary majors is divided into three 4-week sessions (A, B, and C) while for secondary majors it is divided into two 6-week sessions (1 and 2). In most cases, you will be expected to attend one class period every day during your assigned session. This is intended to give you the opportunity to see the continuity in an instructional unit over the course of the session. However, in some circumstances, alternative schedules will need to be arranged. At minimum, you are expected to complete at least 25 hours of your field experience in the classroom and 5 additional hours of planning time outside the classroom. Any time that you miss due to illness or personal reasons needs to be rescheduled. Missed time that is not under your control, such as PLS inservice or snow days, also needs to be made up. This should be negotiated directly with your PLS supervising teacher.
