Policies & Procedures -- W to X
Policy Statement:
Any student doing less than satisfactory work should be encouraged to withdraw or be informed that he/she may fail student teaching if he/she elects to continue. A student may choose to be withdrawn voluntarily and accept a “W” for the student teaching assignment. A student doing less than satisfactory work may be involuntarily withdrawn if in the judgment of the center coordinator, building principal, and cooperating teacher the student teacher cannot successfully complete the student teaching assignment.
Removal of a student from student teaching will require a Notice of Concern be filed documenting the deficiencies and the plan of action identified.
A student who withdraws or is withdrawn from student teaching will receive a “W” (withdrawn) if withdrawn after the official University date for withdrawing without a “W”. A student withdrawn past the halfway point will receive a “NC” (no credit). Any student withdrawn from student teaching will have an electronic Notice of Concern filed that states the issues that caused the withdrawal, the actions already taken, and the plan of action for the student to complete prior to being considered for returning to student teaching.
A student who completes the steps identified in the Notice of Concern and requests another student teaching experience will need to notify the Office of Student Field Experiences to request a student teaching placement. No guarantee can be made to place the student in the requested site, but every effort will be made to provide a high quality teaching experience.
In some cases, the student may need to meet with the Director of Teacher Education and perhaps the Teacher Candidate Professional Review Committee (TCPRC) before being allowed to reenter student teaching.
Extenuating circumstances may require a student to withdraw part way through the experience. Provided a sufficient number of weeks have been completed and the performance of the student has been highly competent or outstanding, the registration could be changed to fewer hours and the student could receive credit for the completed portion only. This can only be done with the approval of the department head and the UNI Registrar’s office.
A student who has been advised to withdraw might choose to continue. The coordinator must notify the student that although the experience can be completed with the approval of the cooperating teacher and building administrator, the student may still receive a “NC” for the experience. If the student decides to continue, he/she will not be permitted to withdraw at a later date and receive a “W”.
