Policies & Procedures -- I to J

Incomplete Grade

The “I” is rarely given as a grade in student teaching. The “W” should be considered when the following circumstances are present: 1) the student teacher voluntarily decided to withdraw from student teaching within the time limits established by university policy, or 2) when the performance of a student teacher is unsatisfactory and the assignment is to be terminated by the coordinator, the cooperating school principal, cooperating teacher, or a mutual agreement between the student teacher and the coordinator.

The “I” is limited to assigned work not completed during the final week of the student teaching period. Work reported as “Incomplete” must be completed within six months of the time the “I” was filed. Incomplete work not made up within the six month period is automatically entered as “No Credit” on the student’s record.

When work is incomplete at the conclusion of the student teaching period, an “I” will be reported. If the student teacher is doing competent work but is unable to complete the requirements during the regular student teaching period due to extenuating circumstances (absence due to illness, personal, or professional reasons) consideration should be given to making up the days by extending the student teaching period into the period that immediately follows to satisfy the course requirements. If the student teaching period is extended an “I” shall be authorized and recorded until the student has satisfactorily completed the required work.

If the performance of the student teacher is unsatisfactory and the student elects not to withdraw, the “NC” mark for no credit shall be given if three or more of the 14 items shown on the Student Teaching Evaluation are marked “unsatisfactory”.

The coordinator has the authority to assign an “I” grade. The “I” should not be used as a device by which the incompetent student teacher is given extra time to do what should have been done during the regular student teaching period. It is the responsibility and prerogative of the coordinator to determine if the extenuating circumstances are appropriate for assigning the grade of “I”, and to take the initiative in proposing such action to the student teacher. The coordinator may wish to confer with the supervising teacher(s) before making this decision.

Interviews

Interviews are a significant part of the assignment process. All student teachers desiring to student teach during the fall semester will be interviewed on an announced date the preceding spring. Those who desire to student teach during the spring semester will be interviewed on an announced date in the preceding fall. Interviews are held in Mauker Union.

Students sign up for a designated interview time on lists posted outside of the Student Field Experiences office. Students who fail to appear at interviews may not be guaranteed a placement during the semester requested. Students who intend to student teach but are not able to attend interviews as scheduled must call the Student Field Experience office at 273-2202 prior to the interview date.

Involvement in Inter-Departmental Projects

The Office of Student Field Experiences Coordinators are interested in cooperating with other university departments on interdepartmental research and study projects involved with teacher education. In order to fully support these research projects, there must be an orderly process coordinating these projects with the regular teacher education program.

When an interdepartmental project is proposed which will involve the OSFE program, the Department Head will review the proposal, communicate its contents to the coordinators and sign off on the proposal. The following may be considered:

  • Implication for placement of student teachers

  • Implication for supervisor loads

  • Implication of coordinator’s time commitment

  • Implication for school district resources
