Policies & Procedures -- G to H
Any student teacher who alleges that his/her rights have been jeopardized or that a policy statement has been violated, misinterpreted or misapplied may file a grievance in accordance with the student grievance procedures as outlined in the Policies and Procedures Manual, University of Northern Iowa and the UNI Student Policy Handbook.
Grievance of a Coordinator’s Decision
Grievance procedures against a faculty member can be found at: http://www.uni.edu/pres/policies/1202.shtml
Grievance procedures for individuals contesting a student teaching decision include:
The student must first notify the faculty coordinator to determine if a resolution can be made with the coordinator. If the student remains unsatisfied, the student is to make an appointment to meet with the Director of Student Field Experiences to explain the situation. After gathering information from all parties, the Director of Student Field Experiences will make a decision.
If the student remains unsatisfied, the student should then make an appointment with the Department Head of his/her major area of study. If the Department Head sides with the student, an appointment should be made with the Director of Teacher Education to file an appeal. The Director of Teacher Education will make a referral to the Teacher Candidate Professional Review Committee (TCPRC) for a final decision.
All students taking 5 or more credit hours at the University of Northern Iowa are required to pay a Mandatory Health Fee. This fee is a support fee not a user fee. Other examples of support fees you pay are the Library Fee and Student Activity Fee. The Mandatory Health Fee provides the following services to all students"
Student Health Clinic Services (prescriptions are available by mail)
-
Wellness and Recreation Services
-
Counseling Services
-
A campus wide public health program including health education and preventative substance abuse and sexual abuse programs, designed to make UNI a safer environment for all students
-
Services for students with disabilities and victims of sexual assault
-
Immunizations and travel health information.
-
Legislative involvement in preventing and preparing for potential health risks to the campus population
Through the concept of shared responsibility we can maintain a safe and healthy campus for the entire student body at a reasonable cost. All students, even those who have not been ill or injured for 4 years and never used the Health Clinic, still have benefited from the Mandatory Health Fee. Students who may be out of state and not able to access these facilities, are not granted waivers of the Mandatory Health Fee.
Housing during student teaching is the responsibility of the student. Students must arrange for housing accommodations for the time of their experience and should plan for the semester beginning early in their educational experience. No guarantees are made as to where students will be placed for their student teaching experience.
