Your first tape should be very early in your first placement. This should not be your very first teaching episode, but one of the early ones. The purpose is to allow you to sit back and observe yourself on tape and identify the strengths and weaknesses of your communication and presentation skills. At this early stage in your teaching career, hopefully, we can reinforce the things you are doing well and make you aware of things that you need to improve upon. Trying to correct flaws in your communication and presentation skills is easier to do early in your student teaching semester rather than later. Ideally you will tape a presentation to the whole class. The length of time isn't important, in fact, a shorter presentation might be better. So don't feel like you need to tape a whole class period, 15 or 20 minutes should be adequate. When you tape, have the camera focused only on you. Because of privacy concerns, taping the students can raise issues; although it's fine to be able to hear their voices, don't have the camera scan the room or focus on a student when one may be talking. Soon after taping, sit down and review the tape using the attached sheet as a guide for reviewing your communication and presentation skills. If your cooperating teacher is willing, he or she could review the tape also. This could be done with you or at a separate viewing and then your cooperating teacher could share his/her analysis. After you have viewed the tape and discussed it with your cooperating teacher, write a journal entry that discusses your communication and presentation strengths and weaknesses. In your analysis include the main areas of improvement that you will be focusing on and what specifically you are going to do differently or how you will try to change. This analysis should be done by the beginning of the 4th week at the latest. If a video camera isnТt available, contact me and weТll make arrangements for you to use one of the cameras available in the Northeast Iowa Region. Communication and Presentation Analysis Analyze the first tape focusing on the following communication and presentation skills. Remember, for this analysis you are not looking at the content or lesson structure, only on you. Voice Was the volume of my voice loud enough for the class to hear? Did I vary the volume of my voice: using a louder volume to get the class's attention or to make a point? Did the tone of my voice suggest enthusiasm? Fear? Uncertainty? Friendliness? Some other emotion? Did I vary the tone of my voice or was I mono-tonal? What was the pace of my speech? Too slow? Too Fast? Did I vary the pace of my speech given the content of the presentation? Eyes Did I make eye contact with the whole class or did I focus on certain individuals? Body Was my overall appearance professional? Did I look like a teacher? Did I stand in one place or move around? What was my posture (sitting or standing)? ("stand up straight! Shoulders back") Did I lean against anything or balance on one foot and then the other? What was I doing with my hands during my presentation? Did I appear awkward and unsure of what to do with my hands? Was I unconsciously fixing my hair? Did I have my hands in my pockets? Did my body language convey fear? Uncertainty? Enthusiasm? Nervousness? Speech Was my speech easy to understand? Did I mumble or get quiet near the end of statements? Did I use vocabulary and sentence structures appropriate for the grade I was working with? Did I use filler words or sounds such as "you know", "uh", "and"? Did I use or begin sentences with the same word many times? Such as "OK" Was my grammar correct and did I avoid using slang expressions? As you watched yourself teach, were you aware of any other communication or presentation strengths or weaknesses that may not have been covered in this guide? If so, what were they? Of the areas that you identified as weaknesses, which do you feel could interfere with your effectiveness as a teacher and, therefore, you need to try to correct during your student teaching? ┤╢aКGMЖЗglп░x{°ЇяЇ°ЇъЇцЇъЇъЇъЇъЇhj?Я h8 H5Б h8 HH*h8 H h8 H5БCJ▌ ▐ ═ ╬ !"}~`bКЛFGMЛїО fgl··°°°°°°°°°°··°°°єєєє°°юш°Д╨`Д╨ & F & F$a${¤l░┘*q/wx╪3u╛■ ╖╕xyz{·їїїїїяэшшшшшээээээээ & FД╨`Д╨ & F & F(░╨/ ░р=!░"░#Ра$Р╨%░░╨░╨ Р╨ЖЬ<@ё < NormalCJ_HmH sH tH DAЄ бD Default Paragraph FontViє │V Table Normal :V Ў4╓4╓ laЎ (kЇ ┴(No List HЩЄH j? Я╥pь} @Аj;{░@  Unknown            GРЗz А Times New Roman5РАSymbol3&Р Зz А Arial5& ЗzaА Tahoma"1ИЁ╨hу╕Fу╕FЄ▒Fuu$Ёе└┤┤А4ss2ГЁ▀▀HP Ё ?ф                     j? Document.8Ї9▓q
