Out of State Student Teaching
Information for UNI Students
Where can I go to student teach out of state?
You may apply to student teach anywhere in the United States. Every effort will be made to accommodate your request.
How is the school identified where I'll be student teaching?
Each placement is unique and arranged on an individual basis. All student teaching placements must be coordinated through the Out of State and International Student Teaching Program. Students may assist with the process, but students may not finalize a placement. The Out of State and International Student Teaching Office must approve all placement sites. School districts, local universities, and other resources are used to identify student teaching sites. Some students are placed in schools with which they are familiar through Participation Week or some other professional activity. You are never forced to go anywhere out of state if you don't like the school or location. If your choice is not available, an alternate out of state or Iowa placement will be found for you.
Why wouldn't I get my particular out of state request?
There are a number of reasons why requests may not be filled. A cooperating teacher might not be available; a course or program might not be offered in the area that your major requires; a clinical supervisor might not be available to assist with your student teaching mentoring; a school might be at capacity for student teachers. There are many critical elements that must be met to insure a quality student teaching experience.
What if something happens and I can't go out of state?
If something happens and you can't go out of state or if your placement cannot be finalized, an alternate Iowa placement will be identified for you.
Can I plan to travel to my student teaching site and visit for a while before student teaching?
Until you have a written invitation to student teach from your host school, your student teaching placement is not final. We do not recommend that students travel to their requested site until their placement is finalized.
