History

Alpha Delta Mu National Social Work Honor Society was founded in the fall of 1976 by the late Dr. J. Lawrence Feagins at Morgan State University. In 1977, Alpha Delta Mu was incorporated under the non-profit laws of the State of Maryland and became a national organization as chapters were established in many colleges and universities throughout the United States.

Colors: Black and Silver

Motto: Advocate of the People


Purpose

The purpose of this organization is to advance excellence in social work practice and to encourage, stimulate and maintain scholarship of the individual members in all fields, particularly in Social Work. When inducted into Alpha Delta Mu, the student is asked to commit him or herself to a life of scholarship, to promise to add to the accumulating body of Social Work knowledge, and to commit to the development within self of the realities of human feeling and human concern.

 

Criteria for Membership

1 . Achieved junior or senior standing;

2. Earned a minimum of 12 semester hours or equivalent in Social Work;

3. Achieved an overall grade point average of 3.25 or above and a 3.5 in social work courses (based on a four point scale);

4. Been enrolled in an undergraduate social work or welfare program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.

 

Induction

A ceremony is held each year to induct new members in to the Honor Society.
