What is a Student Information System?

A Student Information System (SIS) is a software package comprised of a number of distinct modules including Student Records, Registration, Financial Aid, Billing and Accounts Receivable, Prospective Students and Admission, Advising and Residence. The number and variety of modules underline the fact that there are many stakeholders who have a strong interest in the project, and project development will include representatives and input from all across campus.

What is a Student Information System?

Our current system came on line in 1982 and has been regularly updated and expanded since then. It is very functional, highly customized and still reliable, but the underlying database is becoming dangerously outdated. Continued technical support from the vendor is very questionable which, in the long term, could render the system unusable. With new and emerging technology demands, it is past time to bring a new system online.

What is the process for obtaining a new system?

We have contracted with Moran Technology Consultants to lead us through an assessment and planning process. Phase one of the process includes a series of meetings, interviews, and workshops to be held with the consultants to determine what we need in a new Student Information System. These workshops will include representatives from across campus and will take place through the spring semester.

How can I give input?

Once the workshops and interviews have been completed (involving an estimated 120 persons from across campus) we will identify desired elements for a UNI Student Information System and distribute a campus wide survey. All faculty and staff will then have the opportunity to fill out the survey and offer input on what elements they believe are most important to an effective system for the campus.

How much will this cost?

At this time there is no firm cost established. A project of this size and scope will likely run in the millions of dollars. One of the outcomes of working with Moran Technology Consultants is to identify what elements are essential to a UNI Student Information System. This information will be compiled and provide the basis for a Request for Proposal that will be sent to vendors. Vendor responses will include costs associated for purchase and implementation of a system.

How will we pay for a new system?

At this time the Cabinet is continuing its short term and long range budget planning process. While looking at a variety of ways to fund the project it is clear that the effort will need to be multi-source and multi-year.

How long will it take to get a new system?

The initial planning phase will take place during the Spring semester 2008. We tentatively plan to send out the Request for Proposals early summer and will evaluate and determine next steps based on those responses. To acquire and completely install a new system, once it has been selected, will take several years.
