Appeals Process

An appeal or grievance may be filed by any student (or his/her legal representative) served by Student Disability Services at the University of Northern Iowa who believes a decision has adversely affected his/her delivery of services. Any action or complaint will not result in retaliation or barriers to services.

PROCEDURE:

1. Discuss the concern with the person who made the decision or with whom the issue began.

2. If the issue or concern cannot be resolved with the staff person involved, schedule an appointment with the Coordinator of Student Disability Services. The Coordinator will discuss the issue with the people involved and make a decision.

3. If the issue or concern cannot be resolved by the Coordinator (or if the Coordinator is the staff person involved), schedule an appointment with the Dean of Students. The Dean will discuss the issue with the people involved and make a decision.

4. If the issue or concern cannot be resolved by the Dean of Students (or if the Dean is the staff person involved), schedule an appointment with the Associate Director of Compliance and Equity Management. The staff in Compliance and Equity Management will listen to the student's issue or concern and inform the student of his/her options in regard to filing a complaint.

5. If the issue or concern cannot be resolved by the staff in Compliance and Equity Management, they will refer the student served to the appropriate outside agency for resolution.

NOTE: Grievances or appeals should be discussed and resolved as soon as possible following the incident. At times, however, the consequences of decisions, actions, issues, or concerns are not immediately evident or realized. Therefore, students (or their legal representatives) served are not limited as to when grievances or appeals may be filed.
